Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai is renowned university funded by the government of Maharashtra. Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai was established in the year 1933 as University Department of Chemical Technology of Bombay. The University Department of Chemical Technology was renamed to Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology (Autonomous) (MUICT) (Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai) on 26 January 2002.

Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai is rated as number one in Chemical Engineering and Technology in India, also as number one among all non-USA universities and is 4th in these areas in the world, according to the surveys conducted by Georgia Tech over the years.

The institute’s focus is mainly on research and training the departments of chemical engineering, chemical technology, and pharmacy.

Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai offers PhD Programme with several specializations. The candidates will have to go through a written examination for taking admission in the PhD Programme offered by Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai.

Eligibility

Ph.D. (Bioprocess Technology)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Bioprocess Technology must fulfil the following criteria: -

  1. A Bachelor degree (12+4) in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy or an equivalent.
  2. A Master's degree in Chemical Engineering/ Bioprocess Technology/ Chemical Technology from any branch at ICT/ Pharmacy/ M. Tech. Biotechnology/ Biochemical Engineering or any other UGC recognized university with at least 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 55%.

Ph.D. (Dyestuff Technology)

The candidate applying for Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering must have the following: -

  1. A Master's degree in Chemical Engineering / Chemical Technology (any branch in ICT)/ Pharmacy/ Plastic Engineering of ICT/ Master’s in Engineering in Petrochemical Engineering or Environmental Engineering.
  2. A Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from ICT or any other UGC recognized university with at least 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 55%

Ph.D. (Food Biotechnology)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Food Biotechnology must have the following: -

  1. A Bachelor's degree (12+4) in Food Engineering and Technology or Biotechnology/ Food Biotechnology of any UGC recognized University with 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA (55% marks or an equivalent CGPA in case of reserved category).
  2. A Master's degree in Food Engineering and Technology / Food Technology/ Biotechnology/ Food Biotechnology/Food and Biochemical Engineering/ Chemical Technology (any branch at ICT)/ Chemical Engineering of any UGC recognized University with 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA (55% marks or an equivalent CGPA in case of reserved category).

Ph.D. (Food Engineering and Technology)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Food Engineering and Technology must have the following: -

  1. Bachelor's degree (12+4) in Food Engineering and Technology or an equivalent.
  2. Master's degree in Food Engineering / Food Technology/ Food and Biochemical Engineering/ Chemical Technology (any branch at ICT)/ Chemical Engineering of any UGC recognized University with 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA (55% marks or an equivalent CGPA in case of reserved category).

Ph.D. (Oleo chemicals and Surfactants Technology) , Ph.D. (Pharmaceutical Technology) & Ph.D. (Surface Coating Technology)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Green Technologymust have a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering/ Chemical Technology (any branch at ICT)/ Pharmacy/ Plastic Engineering of ICT or any other UGC recognized university with at least 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 55%.

Ph.D. (Civil Engineering) , Ph.D. (Electronics Engineering) & Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Civil Engineering must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in Civil/ Electrical/ Electronics/ Mechanical/ Production/ Industrial/ Instrumentation Engineering from any UGC recognized University as equivalent thereto with 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 55%.

Ph.D. (Biochemistry)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Biochemistry must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in any biological faculty of science of any university recognized by UGC with minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 50%.

Ph.D. (Biotechnology)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Biotechnology must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in any biological faculty of science of any university recognized by UGC with minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 50%.

Ph.D. (Chemistry)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Chemistry must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in Chemistry from any University recognized by UGC with minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 50%.

Ph.D. (Food Science and Nutrition)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Food Science must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in Food Science, Food Processing, Nutrition, Home Science, Post harvest Technology, Horticulture, Dairy Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Organic Chemistry of any UGC recognized University with 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA (55% marks or an equivalent CGPA in case of reserved category).

Ph.D. (Mathematics)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Mathematics must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in Mathematics of any University recognized by UGC with minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 50%.

Ph.D. (Physics)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Physics must have the following: -

A Master’s Degree in Physics of any University recognized by UGC with minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 50%.

Ph.D. (Textile Chemistry)

The candidates applying for Ph.D. in Textile Chemistrymust have a Master’s Degree in Textile Chemistry/ Textile Clothing/ Life Sciences/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Chemistry of ICT or of any University recognized by UGC with minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA. For reserved categories the marks or an equivalent CGPA is relaxed to 50%.

Note

  • The candidates might be considered for admission who have passed the Master's degree by Research of any University recognized by UGC only if they have fellowship from any recognized funding agency.
  • All the candidates will have to take the institutional written test and interview to qualify for admission.
  • The candidates having their scores in NET/ GATE/ GPAT/ CSIR/ DBT/ - JRF qualifying examinations or other equivalent examinations and holding valid fellowship will be given preference in the process of admission.

Additional eligibility criteria for Teachers for admission to PhD

The candidate applying under this category should be a permanent teacher having full time teaching experience of two years in any degree college or five years teaching experience in Junior college/ diploma college/ Polytechnic.

Candidates who are teaching in any Engineering/Technology college approved by UGC/AICTE can also apply for PhD (Tech.) and those who are teaching in any Science college can apply for PhD (Sc.).

Additional eligibility criteria for National Laboratories/ Government Institutions for admission to PhD

Candidate should have minimum 2 years experience as an employee of any National Laboratory or Government Institutions

Additional eligibility criteria for Industry sponsored in-house candidate

Candidate should have a minimum of 2 years industrial experience.

The industry where the candidate works must have a well-equipped laboratory for research with atleast one PhD employee working in the relevant area.


How To Apply

Ph.D. (Bioprocess Technology) , Ph.D. (Dyestuff Technology) & Ph.D. (Food Biotechnology)

  • Candidates desirous of taking admission in ICT in Ph.D. Programme are required to follow the following steps to apply for the same:
  • The candidates are required to purchase and fill the form with accurate details.
  • The candidates will have to fill separate forms for different course choices. [Ph.D. (Tech.) and Ph.D. (Sci.) separate for each specialization].
  • The application forms will be sold along with a Handbook. The application form and Handbook will be made available for sale at ICT counter on 5th May 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the counter will be closed on the Sundays and 2nd & 4th Saturday and Public Holidays.
  • The payment for the forms is to be made via cash.

The candidates also have the option to download or order the forms by post.

  1. The application form can be downloaded by clicking here.
  2. If the candidate is ordering the forms via post the payment is to be made only by Pay Order/DD of any Nationalized/ Scheduled/ Private Sector Commercial Bank drawn in favor of ''Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai'', payable at Mumbai. It is non-refundable and non-transferable payment under any circumstances.
  3. Payments made via cheque or money order are unacceptable.
  4. The application form will be sent by the Registered Post Parcel on the address the candidate had provided along with a Handbook
  5. The application forms must be filled in with true and accurate information.
  6. Incomplete forms sent will be rejected and there will be no correspondence made.
  7. The forms are to be submitted along with the attested photocopies of the certificates required by the last date.
  8. The candidates are required to get the photocopies of the certificates which are to be submitted by the Principal of the College or Gazetted Officer or Special Executive Magistrate or Head Master of a Secondary School or teaching staff of a Government /Govt. Aided College / Polytechnic not below the rank of a Lecturer.
  9. The completely filled application forms are to be summited at ICT counter or sent to the ICT by Post or Courier along with a Pay Order or Demand Draft of any Nationalized/ Scheduled/ Private Sector Commercial Bank drawn in favor of ''Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai'', payable at Mumbai.
  10. The candidates will be returned a tear-off receipt, which is at the bottom of the application form. While accepting the application form the clerk will sign and stamp the receipt and return it. The number on the form is be used for any further correspondence.
  11. Application forms received after the last date of submission will not be accepted.
  12. The candidates applying from SC/ST Categories are required to submit the photocopy of the Caste certificate or Tribe Validity Certificate. The candidates failing to do so will be treated as all the other students of General Category.
