Presidency University, Kolkata, previously known as Hindu College was established in 1917. It is a private university and comprises 7 schools and a college. The college offers undergraduate, integrated, post graduate courses as well as part-time and full-time PhD programs.
Presidency University, Kolkata provides PhD specialization in 3 streams i.e. Engineering, Science & Humanities and Management. The total PhD seats offered is 129. For admission to PhD program, university will conduct an entrance exam and interview round at its campus. Application for the registration of entrance exam will be available on official website. Candidates can register before July 15, 2017.

  • Interested candidates must register themselves by submitting applications along with the fee of INR 1000 through demand draft (DD).
  • Candidates must appear for the PhD entrance test that will take place on July 23, 2017
  • Selection for the admission is done by entrance test followed by an interview.
  • In the interview, Candidates have to present a brief research proposal.
  • Result of the selected candidates will be displayed on the official website on July 26, 2017.

Eligibility

Ph.D. (Bengali) , Ph.D. (English) & Ph.D. (Hindi)

The eligibility criteria for admission to PhD research program are as follows:

  • Master’s Degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory, regulatory body, with a minimum of 55% of marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7 - point scale or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed; or
  • M.Phil. Degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7 – point scale in the M.Phil. Program coursework.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks or an equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B as per UGC guide lines.

Note: Criteria mentioned above will be followed for all the PhD programs.
Instructions for Part-time Internal and External
University provides PhD program for full time candidates as well as part time candidates. For admission to the course, candidates must follow the instructions mentioned below.

Part-Time Internal:
The candidate must be a full time employee of Presidency Group of Institutions.

  • Candidate must submit the application for admission to the PhD Program through the Head of the Department/Institution in which the candidate is a faculty member/full-time employee
  • Candidate must give an undertaking to the effect that as a faculty member of university, he/she will continue to undertake and complete all the academic and administrative work assigned by the Department/Institution, while being an Internal research scholar

Part-Time External:

  • Candidate must submit a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the employer to the effect that the duties allotted by the employer will allow the required time for pursuit of the research work, and

Candidate will be given leave for the duration of one academic term of the University to complete the mandatory PhD. coursework requirements.

Admission form will be available on university’s official website.

  • Application form will be common for both i.e. part-time candidates as well as full-time candidates.
  • Candidates must fill all the required details i.e. personal, educational and experience of candidate.
  • Candidate has to pay non- refundable application fee of INR 1000 in the form of DD (in favor of The Registrar, Presidency University, payable at Bangalore) or through NEFT (Saving A/c: 11890100132860, IFSC Code: FDRL0001189, Name of Beneficiary: Presidency University, Bank Details: Federal Bank, Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore) must be submitted to:

Admission Process

Ph.D. (Bengali) , Ph.D. (English) & Ph.D. (Hindi)

The selection will be on the basis of the entrance test followed by an interview. Appearing in the test does not qualify candidate for admission to the course, they must qualify the required cut- off.

Entrance Test: University will conduct Ph.D. Entrance Test on July 23, 2017. Candidates must obtain a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate, or the minimum equivalent grade decided by the university in the entrance test to qualify for the interview.

Interview/Viva-Voce: Qualification in the entrance test will be followed by an interview conducted by the respective Departmental PhD committee of the University. The interview/viva-voce process shall consist of assessing the candidate on the basis his brief research proposal (of about 500 words) to the interview panel. The proposal should highlight the applicant’s area of interest and an overview of his/her intended direction of research.
