Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) – Deemed to be University is the premier Technological University of Dept. of Defence R&D / DRDO – Ministry of Defence – Govt. of India. It is engaged in imparting technical education, in niche areas at PG (M.Tech) & Ph. D levels over the last 60 years, in its various forms & capacities. The University has been awarded various Education Excellence Awards.

The uniqueness of DIAT is that fresh students have an opportunity to interact with service officers who are doing their M. Tech. and share their field experience with them. The students have an opportunity to visit DRDO laboratories & get opportunity to listen and interact with scientists engaged in various disciplines carrying out state of art, Research & Development.

The University invites Applications for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in both Full Time and Part Time courses, in the frontier areas of specialisation for the academic year 2018-19. The admission is based on the performance in the entrance exam (written test) conducted by the department concerned, followed by personal interview. The Application process is partly online and begins from March 30, 2018 (tentative) and partly offline with the submission of the hard copy of the Application Acknowledgment by April 29, 2018 (tentative).

Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. (Aerospace Engineering) , Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) & Ph.D. (Electronics Engineering)

The University offers Ph.D. Programme in the following specialisations:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Computer Science & Engineering
  • Applied Physics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Materials engineering
  • Applied Chemistry

Eligibility Criteria

For Full Time Ph.D. Programme:

You should have passed any of the below mentioned qualifying examination securing at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA/DGPA:

  • Master of Engineering/Master of Technology (or equivalent) for Ph.D. in Engineering/Science.
  • Master in Science (M.Sc. or equivalent) for Ph.D. in Science
  • B.E. / B.Tech with 10 years of research/industrial experience for Ph.D.  In Engineering / Science (this category is only for sponsored candidates)

And you should have qualified in a national level test such as, CSIR/UGC NET, Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), State Level Eligibility Test, accredited by UGC, Rajiv Gandhi National fellowship, NBHM etc. 

Age: You should be at least 28 years as on July 1st, 2017.

For Part time Ph.D. Programme (without scholarship):

You should fulfil either of the following criteria:

  • You should be selected under Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of AICTE, Faculty Development Program of a State Government, and so on.
  • You should be a permanent teacher of the Institute with at least four years of service and also otherwise eligible.
  • You should be a non-teaching permanent employee of the Institute with five years of experience at DIAT, and also otherwise eligible.
  • You should be a JRF/SRF registered in DRDO Laboratories, and sponsored by the respective Laboratories. A sponsorship letter is required from the Director of your respective Laboratory.
  • You should be part of the Project staff (JRF/SRF/PA) working under sponsored projects subject to fulfilling the criteria. If the R&D project funding is over then, the institute funding of stipend will be given subject to qualifying GATE/NET/SLET (scholarship) examination.
  • If you are sponsored as a part-time candidate by a government department/public sector undertaking/ R & D organization/ private industry and institutions, with at least five years of relevant experience, and if you shall work for your Ph.D. in your parent organization fulfilling the residency period requirement.


How to apply?

M.Phil/Ph.D in Engineering & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

You should apply online though the official website of the Institute. You should apply separately if you seek admission to more than one programme.

Application fee:

  • Rs. 500 for general category
  • Rs. 250 for SC, ST, Women, PWD and OBC candidates

You should pay the fee either online or by Demand Draft drawn in favour of Vice Chancellor, DIAT, Pune, payable at Pune.

The application has to be uploaded on the website after filling all the information.

You should take a print out of the Application Acknowledgement generated by the system after upload of application.

You should then send the hard copy of the Application Acknowledgement along with the DD drawn/proof of online payment and with the self-certified copies of mark lists, certificates and other testimonials, in a sealed envelope super scribed with the name of Ph.D. Program to:

These documents should reach DIAT latest by April 29, 2018 (tentative). Application will be processed only on receipt of the acknowledgement with DD.


Selection Process

Your selection will be based on the performance in the entrance exam (written test) conducted by the department concerned followed by personal interview.


Reservation Criteria

The Institute shall implement the reservation policy in Ph.D. admission in accordance with relevant act of Parliament being in-force at the time.
