Jadavpur University M.Phil. And Ph.D. Admissions 2018

Jadavpur University, West Bengal offers research based programs such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programs. The application forms for all courses will be made available online the University website in the month of May and admissions to the programs are done by the month of July.

Jadavpur University offers 15 M.Phil. courses in different subjects through several departments and 11 Ph.D. Courses. There is also a provision for continuation of Ph.D. after completing M.Phil. from this university. The University even offers several postgraduate and professional courses.

The last date for submission of Application form for M.Phil. Program is May 17, 2017. The application forms for Ph.D. Program can be submitted from April 25, 2017 to May 13, 2017.

The admission to the above-mentioned courses are done through Admission Test conducted by the various departments of the University, including the Interview for many programs.

  • For admission to the program, candidate should have passed the Master’s Degree in the relevant discipline for which one wishes to pursue the M.Phil. Program
  • If you are a College Teacher with 5 years of teaching experience in a government recognised college, you should have secured at least 40% marks in the MA Economics for M.Phil. Economics and 50% marks in the Master’s Degree in the relevant discipline for other M.Phil. Programs.    
  • If you belong to SC/ST category, you should have secured at least 40% marks in the Master’s Degree in the relevant discipline for eligibility to the M.Phil. Program.
  • Candidate who have appeared or due to appear in final examination of MA/MSc or its equivalent (in the relevant subjects) scheduled to be completed before June 15, 2017, securing at least the minimum percentage of marks mentioned above, with at least 40% marks in each course/paper are also eligible to apply.

  • For admission to the above-mentioned program, candidate should have obtained the Master’s degree in any discipline from any University or other Institution recognized by this University or such other degree as may be considered sufficient for this purpose by the University; or
  • You could also have obtained a Post-graduate Diploma/Degree of less than two years’ duration from any University or Institution recognized by this University provided that you have completed at least a total of five years of graduate and postgraduate study in a recognized university or Institution; or
  • You could also have obtained the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering /Technology /Pharmacy /MCA of this university or from any other university or Institutions recognized as equivalent thereto by the university; or
  • M.Phil. students of Jadavpur University who have successfully defended their viva-voce examinations and have valid Continuing UGC Fellowship (NET-JRF/RGNF/Moulana Azad and the like) may also apply. They may be considered under Continuing Fellowship Holder category provided they have not registered themselves in any other university/Institute after completing their M.Phil. degrees at Jadavpur University.


How To Apply

M.Phil. Program:

The application process is completely online and the duly filled Application Forms must be submitted by May 17, 2017. The form can be accessed on the University website.

Online Application: The entire Application process comprises primarily of three steps.

Step 1: First, you must login and enter your personal and educational information here. You have to provide this information only once, regardless of how many departments you apply for. If you are not sure about the meaning of any box, place the cursor over that box, and a Tool Tip box will appear. Now click Submit button to save your data. You will then get a unique number. Please note down this, you will need this No. to login to this system in future.

Step 2: You will now be required to select the department you wish to apply for. Before applying you can review the eligibility criteria from the link on the top right corner. If you are eligible, click the Apply button. For each department that you apply for, you will be generated a different Application number. You must note down that Application number.

Step 3: In the Main Page you will get the link for online payment of Application Fee of Rs. 500 which can be made online through SBI I-Collect system in any of the following modes:

  • Net Banking
  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card

Now you need to go to the link and pay the Application Fees using Net Banking/ Credit Card/ Debit Card. You should then upload the SB Collect Reference No (starting with DU) in this website, and click on submit.

Ph.D. Program:

Candidates should apply in the prescribed form available on the website. The duly filled in Application form must be submitted by April 25, 2017.

Enclosures: The following documents should be attached with the application form: 

  1. Two recent passport size photographs.
  2.  Attested copies of all mark-sheets and certificates, madhyamik admit card/certificate for verification of age, SC/ST/PD/OBC-A/OBC-B certificate, where applicable.
  3. NET/SET certificate, if any.
  4. A candidate who has a two-year M.Phil. Degree from any university other than Jadavpur University will be required to submit a certificate from the competent authority stating that the selection to the M.Phil. course has been made through a written test and that a full paper on Research Methodology of at least one semester duration was taught in the M.Phil. Course. Otherwise waiver from WRET and/or course-work shall not be granted.

Application Fee: You should pay the Application fee of Rs. 500 through a Demand Draft drawn in favour of The Registrar, Jadavpur University, payable at Kolkata.

Note:

The Admission Test for M.Phil. Program will be conducted by the respective departments. Candidate should be able to secure a minimum of 50% marks to qualify in the Admission Test.

The Admission Test for Ph.D. Program will also be conducted by the respective Departments. It will be for a duration of two hours, except for Economics which will be for two and a half hours. Candidates who have done M.Phil. Program or have qualified in the NET/SET/GATE/Teacher Fellow or any other examination shall be exempted from giving the Written Test and will have to directly appear in the Interview.

For the Interview to the Ph.D. Program, candidate will be required to submit a Statement of Purpose relevant for his/her intended field of research, with not more than 500 words.

The reservation criteria will apply only to those candidates domiciled in the state of West Bengal. It will be based on the policy followed by the state government rules.

For PWD: Persons with 40% or more disability will only be considered for admission under PD category under PWD. Applicants under PD category will have to appear before an expert committee to be constituted by the University.

For OBC Category: The candidates who will be provisionally selected under the OBC- A and OBC- B categories must produce an OBC certificate at the time of counselling/ admission, whose date of issue should not be earlier than June 2015. It should be issued by the competent authority that clearly indicates:

  1. The category (A or B) they belong to;
  2. That they do not belong to creamy layer of the society
