Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) is a private university located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The institute was established in 1981.  It has been awarded "Five Star" rating and "A" grade by the NAAC and UGC respectively. NMIMS has also been awarded an "A***" rating by CRISIL. The institute was granted "Deemed University" status by the UGC in 2003 and can hence award full academic degrees to its students.

The University offers Doctor of Philosophy Programme in various specializations for a minimum of 3 years a maximum of 5 years. It has a total intake of 7 seats with 2 seats in Biological Science and 2 Regular and 3 Professional seats in Chemistry. The Integrated M.Sc. – Ph.D. Programme is also available whereby M.Sc. Degree takes 2 years including 6 months project work and the entire programme takes 5 years.

The University invites Applications for admission to the Ph.D. Programme and the Integrated M.SC. Degree-Ph.D. Programme for the academic year 2017-18. The selection for both the programmes will be through a Written Test followed by an Interview, different for every specialization. The applications are available online and must be submitted by June 16th, 2017 for the Ph.D. Programme and by June 3rd, 2016 for the Integrated M.Sc. – Ph.D. Programme.

Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. (Biological Sciences) & Ph.D. (Chemistry)

For Biological Sciences

You must have passed M.Sc. Degree in Biology (Minimum 2 years Program) in any one of the following subjects: (Microbiology, Biochemistry, Life Science, Biotechnology, Botany, Zoology, Applied Biology) or a degree in allied fields such as M. B. B. S., M. Pharm., M. E. /M. Tech. (Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering) from a recognized University

  • with a minimum of 60% marks / grade B+; or
  • with a minimum of 55% marks / grade B in postgraduate degree and Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 60% marks / grade A.

For Chemistry (Regular Admission)

You must have passed M.Sc. Degree (Minimum 2 years Program) in Chemistry or in any branch of Chemical Sciences, Biochemistry or M. Pharm

  • with a minimum 60% marks / grade B+.
  • with a minimum of 55% marks / grade B in postgraduate degree and Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 60% marks / grade A.

For Chemistry (Professional Candidates): You should fulfil any of the following criteria:

  • You should have a M.Sc. Degree in Chemistry (Minimum 2 years Program) or any branch of Chemical Sciences or M. Pharm. from any recognized university/institute with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade.
  • You should be a teacher having full time teaching experience of at least two years in Degree College / University in the relevant area.
  • You should be a graduate of this or any other recognized university and working in National Laboratories/ Institutes/Government/Private Organization, nominated/sponsored by the respective employer.

For all courses: If you are appearing or awaiting for final year result, you are not eligible to apply.

Master of Science [M.Sc] + Ph.D. (Biological Sciences) & Master of Science [M.Sc] + Ph.D. (Chemistry)

Integrated M.Sc. Degree.-Ph.D. Programme

For Biological Sciences: You should have passed Bachelor of Science in Biology (Microbiology, Biochemistry, Applied Biology, Life Science, Biotechnology, Botany, Zoology) or Chemistry, Physics (2 years of Biology at Graduate level), or B. Pharm., B. E./B. Tech. (Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering) from a recognized University with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks or equivalent grade.

For Chemistry: You should have passed Bachelor of Science in any branch of Chemical Sciences or Biochemistry/Bachelor of Pharmacy from any recognized university/institute with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks or equivalent grade.

For Statistics (Only for M.Sc. Degree): You should have passed Bachelor of Science in statistics from any recognized university/institute with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or equivalent grade.


Application Procedure

You should register yourself online on the official website.

You should then fill in the required personal and education details as required.

You do not have to complete the online form in one sitting. You can complete it in multiple sittings, the convenient “auto-save” option keeps your work saved regularly.

Once you have completed the form, you should click on the “Submit” button. You will then be directed to the payment gateway.

Application Fee: You should pay registration fee of Rs. 1000 (non-refundable) by Credit Card or Debit Card

List of Documents: You should attach the following enclosures:

  • Degree Marksheet (All years) & Certificate ( Self attested photo copy)

Selection Process

Ph.D. (Biological Sciences) & Ph.D. (Chemistry)

You will be selected on the basis of a Written Test followed by a Personal Interview.

Written Test will consist of 2 sections: Section A will be a General Aptitude test and Section B will be Area/Domain Specific.

Exemptions: If you have qualified in NET/SET/GATE/JRF/GPAT examination of the apex bodies in higher/technical professional education such as UGC, CSIR, ICMR or other equivalent examinations, you are exempted from NMIMS entrance test. However you will have to appear for Personal Interview.

Personal Interview will comprise of a Presentation based on SOP which will be followed by the Personal Interview. During the interview, you will be expected to discuss your research Interest / area.

The final merit list will be based on performance in Written Test & Personal Interview taken together.

Master of Science [M.Sc] + Ph.D. (Biological Sciences) & Master of Science [M.Sc] + Ph.D. (Chemistry)

You will be selected on the basis of an Entrance Test which will be of 70 Marks followed by Personal Interview for 30 Marks.

The Written Test will be specific to your choice of specialization. It will be for a duration of 2 hours. All the questions would be compulsory and in multiple choice format. There shall be no negative marking for an incorrect answer.

The topics covered under the respective tests are as follows:

Biological Sciences:

  • Logical reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language- 20 marks
  • Biotechnology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Life sciences & Biochemistry – 50 marks

Chemical Sciences:

  • Logical reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language- 20 marks
  • Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry & Analytical Chemistry – 50 marks

Statistics:

  • Logical reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language- 20 marks
  • Probability, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematical Statistics – 50 marks


Reservation

The reservation criteria will be as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India.
