Eligibility For B. Tech. in Avionics Engineering

To pursue a B. Tech degree in Avionics Engineering, a candidate must have a pass in 10+2 level study. Most institutions accept only students from the Science stream, with Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics being required subjects. Few institutions specify that Computer Science must also have been a subject of study at the +2 level.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology accepts only those with above 75% at the +2 level (65% for reserved categories). Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and two other subjects, one of which must be a language. JEE Advanced is another criterion for admission.

Selection Process/Entrance Exam

Students wishing to pursue this degree are advised to undertake some of the primary engineering entrance examinations, as most institutions consider this performance as the basis for admissions. Some of the best programmes in this field in the country have their own admission test, such as the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Admission Test. IIT-JEE is also considered for admission in several institutions.

Applications are usually available on the respective online portals of the institutions from mid-May, for a period of around three weeks. There is a total of 60 seats available in the IIST Avionics Engineering course, which is considered at par with the number seen in the different institutions that offer this course, though few in number. Reservation is applicable as per the Government of India rules. The list of selected students is released through online portal based on performance in JEE Advanced.

The prominent colleges in the country who offer this degree do not allow admission without completing the prerequisite processes, i.e., there is no direct admission. The rarity of the course as well as the full-time course structure also leads to lack of lateral entry and distance education options.

Course Structure For B.Tech in Avionic Engineering

The course in institutions such as IIST consists of a full-time course with multiple internal assessments throughout the year. The eight semesters each cover different aspects, with the first two semesters concentrating on establishing the basics.

There is a compulsory internship as part of the course in most institutions. IIST considers it to be a 3-credit course under the curriculum. The institution also helps in internship placements, offering opportunities in ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and other such lucrative options.

Scheme of Assessment

The assessment scheme (followed by the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology as well) consists of three internal ‘quiz’ segments, as well as an end semester examination. The nature of these quizzes may differ depending on the lecturer in charge of the subject.
