Considered to be an integral part of Aeronautical Engineering, Avionics Engineering has been launched as its own B. Tech programme in the recent past, and is one of the fastest developing streams in the industry. It involves a study of electronics, aviation and electrical systems.
In order to pursue this course, candidates must have a pass (some institutes demand up to 75% score) in the qualifying 10+2 examination. Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics must have been subjects of study at the +2 level. Some of the premier institutes offering this course include the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, and UPES.

Candidates who successfully complete this 4 year programme can earn employment in government agencies and other aeronautical firms to analyze and upgrade avionics systems. The starting salary usually lies around the 30,000 range, but can grow considerably with experience.
The B. Tech course in Avionics Engineering is a subset degree of the Aeronautical Engineering course. It is aimed primarily at training students in the fundamentals of Electrical and Electronic systems. This is in order to allow them to specialize in Aviation Electronics (Avionics).
Alongside the core subject courses in Electronics and Computer Systems, the degree usually also involves sub-papers in Aerospace Systems, Economics, Management and Basic Sciences. This increases the scope of the course significantly.
In order to study Avionics Engineering under a B. Tech degree, students must have an inclination towards electronics and electrical systems. A background in Computer Science, and an affinity for Mathematics, is highly advisable. Students who opt for this course are those who are interested in pursuing a career in the fields associated with aeronautics.
Similar to most B. Tech degrees, Avionics Engineering is a 4-year course with 8 semesters. It is a course with full time study in all the institutions in India that offer it.
The B. Tech in Avionics Engineering is offered by few elite institutions in the country. The premier institute remains the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. Other institutes which offer this include the following.
|Name of Institute||City|
|Hindustan University||Chennai, Tamil Nadu|
|Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST)||Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala|
|Shobhit University||Meerut, Uttar Pradesh|
|Universtiy of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES)||Dehradun, Uttarakhand|
To pursue a B. Tech degree in Avionics Engineering, a candidate must have a pass in 10+2 level study. Most institutions accept only students from the Science stream, with Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics being required subjects. Few institutions specify that Computer Science must also have been a subject of study at the +2 level.
The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology accepts only those with above 75% at the +2 level (65% for reserved categories). Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and two other subjects, one of which must be a language. JEE Advanced is another criterion for admission.
Students wishing to pursue this degree are advised to undertake some of the primary engineering entrance examinations, as most institutions consider this performance as the basis for admissions. Some of the best programmes in this field in the country have their own admission test, such as the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Admission Test. IIT-JEE is also considered for admission in several institutions.
Applications are usually available on the respective online portals of the institutions from mid-May, for a period of around three weeks. Selection for admission depends on a number of different criteria, including eligibility, past academic performance, and performance in entrance examinations as well as competitive examinations.
There is a total of 60 seats available in the IIST Avionics Engineering course, which is considered at par with the number seen in the different institutions that offer this course, though few in number. Reservation is applicable as per the Government of India rules. The list of selected students is released through online portal based on performance in JEE Advanced.
The prominent colleges in the country who offer this degree do not allow admission without completing the prerequisite processes, i.e., there is no direct admission. The rarity of the course as well as the full-time course structure also leads to lack of lateral entry and distance education options.

With a degree in Avionics Engineering, a number of career prospects are available, all boasting of lucrative options. While usually starting out at an early salary of around 30,000 monthly, this may grow exponentially with increased experience and qualifications. Possible employers include the Helicopter Corporation of India, and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

|Technical Manager||Analyzing and upgrading systems used in various projects||>10,00,000|
|Avionics Engineer||Working with aircrafts and similar systems alongside aeronautical engineers||>6,00,000|
|Test Engineer||Upgrade and improve avionics systems in various aircrafts etc.||>9,00,000|
The course in institutions such as IIST consists of a full-time course with multiple internal assessments throughout the year. The eight semesters each cover different aspects, with the first two semesters concentrating on establishing the basics.
There is a compulsory internship as part of the course in most institutions. IIST considers it to be a 3-credit course under the curriculum. The institution also helps in internship placements, offering opportunities in ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and other such lucrative options.
The assessment scheme (followed by the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology as well) consists of three internal ‘quiz’ segments, as well as an end semester examination. The nature of these quizzes may differ depending on the lecturer in charge of the subject.
|End Semester Examination||40%|
Failure to clear the end semester examination will result in having to appear for the summer examination. A cumulative score of the three quizzes and the end semester examination is considered as the final assessment score. Internships are considered as a separate 3 credit course, and assessment is based on internship reports and internship feedback.
