M.A. in Geology- What is it About?
MA in Geology is a vast branch of science comprising the study of Earth and its processes. Geology provides primary evidence for phenomena such as plate tectonics, history of life and evolution, and climatic changes. The degree course covers nearly all the aspects of geological processes ranging from minerals and rocks to glacial geology, sedimentation process, climate and weather, and others. With an aim to provide students a wide array of geological knowledge, exposure to research- oriented areas, and a thorough understanding of the practical applications of geology, the course is highly beneficial in terms of employment in private companies as well as government bodies.
The study of geology includes various sub branches: Mineralogy (study of minerals); Paleontology (study of fossils); Structural Geology (study of forces working on the earth’s crust); Geomorphology (the study of the formation of the earth’s crust with its various land forms).
Students can also look for job opportunities in fields such as engineering, mining and petroleum and environmental research work. A fresh graduate in geology can earn an average salary of INR 2-3 LPA.
