M. Sc. Life Sciences or Master of Science in Life Sciences is a postgraduate degree program offered by various universities and colleges around the country. It is a course that spans for two academic years divided into four semesters.
The course gives a deep study of the various life process in plants, animals and human beings along with microorganisms like fungi, algae and virus. It is a study of the living beings at all levels starting from the molecular and cellular levels to the major life processes life respiration, digestion, reproduction etc.
Tuition fees for the course ranges from 4,000 INR to 50,000 INR per year and the condition that is compulsory for getting into this course is that a student must have at least 50% marks in B.Sc. or equivalent.
Employment scope for masters of life science is very big, one can work as a Consultant, museum educator, Pharmaceuticals, Biophysicist, nutritionist after getting the degree. And can earn upto 2 lakh to 5 lakh per annum in the beginning of the career.
The course is about the study of organisms at all the possible levels. The students of life sciences are required to study organisms and microorganisms at the molecular and physiological levels.
The course is an advanced level master degree course and thus requires a pre-understanding of the workings of the organisms on a more general level. This course is a combination of biology at microorganism level as well as at the level of human beings, thus making the scope of the course very broad.
In the recent years, scientists and researchers have taken up the study of microorganisms and organisms very deeply and has made the field of life sciences a very promising career option. The master degree course in life sciences provides better opportunities to the students in order to learn the concepts related to life processes in all beings.
One of the major contribution of life sciences in the field of medicine and health is the study of the cancer cells and tumor cells and their behavior in the physical bodies. This study and the research in this field has helped doctors to come up with cancer treatments by noting their behavioral patterns.
Any student who wishes to make a career in the microbiology or biotechnology or bioinformatics, should opt for this course as it provides a base for all these fields in detail.
The duration for the course in colleges like St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Chhatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur is of 2 academic years which are divided into 4 semesters. The course is divided in such a way that each student has to take up a combination of core courses and present a dissertation at the end of the fourth semester.
However, open universities like IGNOU offers this course with a maximum duration of 5 years.
After passing through M.Sc. Life Sciences a student can further go for M.Phil./Ph.D. in the respective subject. There are more than 1000 colleges in India that offer doctorate in science. One can choose the institute accordingly out of them.
The course is offered by a large number of science universities and colleges all over the country. Some of the few colleges are mentioned here:
Name of the college
St. Xavier’s College
Ramnarain Ruia College
Chhatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University
Central Unievrsity of Jharkhand
Dr. Bhim Ram Ambedkar University
Jawaharlal Nehru University
Devi Ahilya University

National Institute of Technology
Candidates who have completed their B.Sc. degree from any reputed college or university in any of the following subjects with minimum 50% marks in aggregate, are eligible to apply for the course in colleges like Central University of Jharkhand, Ranchi, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Chhatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur. The subjects are:
Botany, biochemistry, biotechnology, life science, microbiology and zoology.
The major admission process to the course is through an entrance exam conducted by the institutes. The entrance exam is a multiple choice objective type question paper which evaluates the basic knowledge of the students in the field of science. Colleges like Manipur University, Imphal, St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi follows the pattern of admission through entrance test.
Students are selected on the basis of their performance in the entrance test along with personal interview and also on the academic performance in the qualifying exam. The students who perform well in the entrance test are then called for the personal interview and on the basis of the three combined- B.Sc. Marks, entrance test and personal interview, they are granted admission to M.Sc. Life Sciences.
The course is also offered by IGNOU as a distance mode program. The minimum duration to complete the course under the distance mode is of 2 years, however, the maximum duration is of 5 years. Another prerequisite for the candidates to acquire admission to the distance mode program is that they should have scored a minimum of 50% marks aggregate in the B.Sc. program. The admission is through an entrance exam conducted by IGNOU and the syllabus includes the basic knowledge of life sciences.
