Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI University, Prof. O.R.S Rao throws light on the placement opportunities available at the University. Read the entire interview to know what message he has for the youth

Ques 1: Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?

Ans. After working in senior roles in the industry (in India and abroad), in reputed companies like HCL Technologies, for about 28 years, I moved into education about 15 years back. All the time I have been with the ICFAI group, wherein I set up business schools in multiple locations, established an Applied Research Unit and have been Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI University, Jharkhand for the last six years. I am very happy regarding my shift from industry to education as it gives me a lot of satisfaction in grooming our students (most of whom come from urban and rural areas of Bihar and Jharkhand) into successful professionals. I am delighted whenever I meet our alumni, who have been working in good roles in reputed corporates. I am all the more happy to see our alumni that have become successful entrepreneurs.

Ques 2: How do you prepare students to face challenges of modern organizations and global standards successfully?

Ans. We review and update our curricula every year, in line with the latest developments in technology and the changing expectations of the industry from the graduating students. For example, recently we added courses in emerging areas like Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, IOT, Digital Marketing etc. in our programs. We equip our students with the hands-on professional skills by exposing them to the live corporate working environments by way of live projects, internships in industry etc. Industry Internship is compulsory for all of our programs, including BBA, BCA and BCom(Hons). Students have to do internships under the guidance of faculty guide and company guide and the internships are evaluated and graded. We maintain continuous industry interface with the industry so that inputs from industry are received in the entire process of education from curriculum updates, skill building till placements. We place a lot of focus on molding the character of the students, which is becoming more important, day-by-day.

Ques 3: What makes your institution stand apart from other institutions?

Ans. We are focused on grooming our students into competent professionals, with values. It is our focus on holistic development of our students that stands us apart from other institutions. Besides the requisite knowledge, professional skills and soft skills, we endeavor to inculcate sound values and ethics among our students so that our students become successful in their professional life and happy in personal life.

Ques 4: How do you create a student centric environment in your university?

Ans. Our core values are Personal Ethics, Quality (in everything we do), Respect for individual and Student Focus. We look at everything we do, from our students’ perspective. Our processes (from admissions, academic delivery, examinations, result declaration etc.) are student friendly, without sacrificing quality and discipline. Special care is taken with regard to students that are unable to perform well. Students are allocated mentors so that they can help in all aspects, some of which go beyond academics. Induction programs and preparatory classes are held for the newly admitted students. Parents-Teachers meetings are held every semester to discuss and address any issues.

Ques 5: How do you look at the placement opportunities offered by your institution and how do you plan to push the envelope further?

Ans. Our efforts in competence building in our students, coupled with a continuous interface with industry, helped in securing excellent placements for our graduating students in reputed companies. 100% of the eligible students of BBA, BCA and MBA that graduated in 2017 received placements in reputed companies, like Reliance Energy, SafeChem, Vivo Mobiles, Shoppers Stop, Concentrix, Genpact, Frontline Global, Raisons group, Hudas Technology, CB&I, Reliance Communications, IndusInd Bank, Iffco Tokio Insurance, etc. Career counseling to the students in our University starts from the time they join the University so that they are groomed as per their career aspirations. Professional certifications in areas like IT, Project Management, financial services etc. helped to improve the employability of our students. We also motivate and encourage our students to become entrepreneurs. A semester long course on Entrepreneurship is compulsory for all programs. Besides, we counsel the interested students and prepare them for entrepreneurship.

Ques 6: What are the problems you have faced in the education industry? How did you tackle them?

Ans. A lot of our students in our University come from urban and rural areas in Bihar and Jharkhand and lack good communication skills. We have been putting in a lot of efforts in training them on communication skills. Considering that all of our programs are career oriented, there is a need for faculty members with industry experience. Besides in-service managers from an industry that have an aptitude for teaching, we also recruit superannuated professionals from industry and groom them into good teachers and academic leaders.

Ques 7: How do you integrate value based education with your curriculum?

Ans. We have incorporated a semester long course on Values and Ethics in all of our programs, in association with Rama Krishna Mission Ashram, Ranchi. Besides concepts, the course deploys role models to explain the importance of values and ethics in day-to-day life. We encourage our students to focus on “Values” based themes during cultural activities. We invite spiritual gurus as guests of honor for various functions in our University so that our students get the benefit of their messages. Blood donation camps are conducted by the University to encourage service motto. Our students visit orphanage homes and senior citizen homes and provide service to the underprivileged. Every year, we give awards to the Student of Values and Teacher of Values to the people that demonstrated Values in their day-to- day work.

Ques 8: Throw some light on the teaching methodology adopted by your Institute.

Ans. Our academic delivery is more learning-focused than teaching-focused. We use Learning Management System (LMS), wherein media and technology are leveraged to make learning more interesting and effective. A range of pedagogical tools like video lectures, animation, case studies, management games, movie clips, live projects, role plays etc. are deployed depending on the subject/course. MCQ part of our examination is conducted online and feedback on performance is given to the students immediately. Live Projects in the industry are taken up by the students so that they are trained how to apply class room learnings in practical situations. Internships in the industry are compulsory for all programs. They are guided by the faculty members and industry guides and are evaluated and graded as part of their program.

Ques 9: What goals do you have in your mind for your institution for the next few years?

Ans. We want to develop our University to be the top ranking private University of choice in Eastern Region, for students, staff, and corporates and is recognized for excellence in Higher Education and Research, especially relevant to social needs in the neighboring region.

Ques 10: What message do you have for students wishing to join your institution in the near future?

Ans. We are committed to grooming all of our students into Competent Professionals, with values so that they are successful in their professional life and happy in their personal life. We expect our students to be Determined (to achieve their goals), Disciplined (good behavior inside the campus and outside), Dedicated (to studies without any distractions) and Diligent (work hard) so that they can achieve success.
