The concept of a smart city by Shivangi, a student of IEC College of Engineering & Technology

A smart city is a foundation for a smarter world. But what is a smart city? What are we expecting from a smart city? And how would it be to live in a smart city? The questions are simple but answers to these questions are complicated. Let’s try to understand the answer in a simple way.

Introduction

We all say the term smart city, but what is actually a smart city? A smart city is an urban settlement with optimized, smartly managed and properly connected resources. A smart city presents all its resources in a well-organized manner. A smart city combines technology, luxury and power consumption to make life much smoother and easier.

A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of things (IoT) technology in a secure fashion to manage a city's assets. These assets include local departments' information systems, schools, libraries, transportation systems, hospitals, power plants, water supply networks, waste management, law enforcement, and other community services. A smart city is promoted to use urban informatics and technology to improve the efficiency of services. ICT allows city officials to interact directly with the community and the city infrastructure and to monitor what is happening in the city, how the city is evolving, and how to enable a better quality of life.

Where did the idea come from?

The concept of smart cities originated at the time when the entire world was facing one of the worst economic crises. In 2008, IBM began work on a 'smarter cities' concept as part of its Smarter Planet initiative. By the beginning of 2009, the concept had captivated the imagination of various nations across the globe.

Countries like South Korea, UAE and China began to invest heavily into their research and formation. Today, a number of excellent precedents exist that India can emulate, such as those in Vienna, Aarhus, Amsterdam, Cairo, Lyon, Malaga, Malta, the Songdo International Business District near Seoul, Verona etc.

According to the documents released on the Smart Cities website, the core infrastructure in a smart city would include:

  • Adequate water supply
  • Assured electricity supply
  • Sanitation, including solid waste management
  • Efficient urban mobility and public transport
  • Affordable housing, especially for the poor
  • Robust IT connectivity and digitalisation
  • Good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation
  • Sustainable environment
  • Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly
  • Health and education

In a smart city, economic development and activity are sustainable and rationally incremental by virtue of being based on success-oriented market drivers such as supply and demand. They benefit everybody, including citizens, businesses, the government and the environment.

The success of the government’s Smart City Mission is largely dependent upon the finance generation at the State-level as well as private investments.
