Indian Institute of Science(IISC) Bengaluru Admission 2017

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), a scientific research and higher education oriented university, located in Bangalore, India, was established in 1909. Tata Institute as it famously called obtained the status of Deemed University in 1958. IISc is widely regarded as India's best university.

Registration for the courses begins in the month of February and March. The institute follows online mode of admissions. No other mode of admission is entertained by the institute.

The institute offers under graduate, post graduate and research programmes in various disciplines of science and technology.

Admissions to the Institute are very competitive. Almost to every course, admission is done on the basis of an entrance exam.

The institute understands the importance of education and helps economically and otherwise backward and capable students to complete their studies without any hindrance. It has various Scholarship programmes that help economically weaker students to meet the expenses of their course.

Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru Under Graduate Admissions 2017

The institute offers a four year Bachelor of Science programme. It is designed as a blend of core science and interdisciplinary topics that will serve as a launching pad for attractive career opportunities in academics and industry. The novelty of this programme lies in its interdisciplinary approach, strong flavor of engineering, exposure to disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, and a year-long research project. The graduates of this programme will obtain a Bachelor of Science (Research) degree with specialization in a particular discipline.

The final semester is devoted exclusively to a research project.

The Candidates who have studied Biology, Statistics, Electronics, Computer Science, etc., in addition to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are also eligible to apply.

Selection to the course is based on the merit in the following national examinations:

KVPY :

(IIT)JEE-Main: Candidates appearing in 2017 and securing a minimum of 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL), 30% (SC/ST/PWD) (IIT)

JEE-Advanced: Appearing in 2017 and securing a minimum of 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL), 30% (SC/ST/PWD)

NEET-UG: Appearing in 2017 and securing a minimum of 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL), 30% (SC/ST/PWD).

Based on the above mentioned criteria, a merit list will be prepared.

Students who complete all requirements for the award of the Bachelor of Science (Research) degree have the option of getting a Master of Science degree by studying at the Institute for a fifth year. The Master of Science degree will be awarded in the six Major disciplines currently available in the Undergraduate Programme. Students opting for the Master of Science programme will get both Bachelor of Science (Research) and Master of Science degrees at the end of the fifth year if they complete all requirements for the award of the Master of Science degree.

Institute also provides reservation for SC/ST/OBC/Person with disability (PWD) and Kashmiri-Migrant (KM) candidates.

Minimum qualification : Relaxed to a PASS CLASS

Seats : Reservation as per Government of India Rules.

Selection : Based on relaxed criteria.

Scholarships

In its bid to encourage education and research, the Institute also has provision for scholarship for meritorious students and students from economically weaker sections. Depending on their performance in national examinations such as KVPY, IITJEE (Main and Advanced), and AIPMT, students will be able to avail themselves of the standard fellowships offered by agencies such as KVPY and DST-INSPIRE.

Institute also pays for the expenses incurred by the students during the admission procedure, once their admission is finalized.

  1. Candidates who join the Institute are eligible for reimbursement of Second-Class Railway / Bus fare by the shortest route from the place of residence to the Institute. This is as follows:
    • For attending the counseling (both ways)
    • For joining the Institute (one way).
  2. A duly filled-in TA form with journey tickets should be submitted to the Admissions Unit within 15 days of joining the Institute. Beyond this period, no claim will be accepted.

TA for (i) will be sent to the home address of the candidate by Money Order only and it will be paid at the Institute for (ii).

The Department of Management Studies, one of the oldest management schools in the country (established in 1948), offers a Master of Management program exclusively for engineering graduates.

These programmes are based on course work. The Institute admits about 400 students every year for its course programmes.  The number includes about 50 sponsored candidates from the Defence Services, Defence Research and Development Organization, Indian Space Research Organization, BARC, NAL, CPRI, KSRTC, BMTC, PWD and BDA, faculty members from engineering colleges under the Quality Improvement Programmes.

NOTE : All the candidates should qualify in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2015 /2016 / 2017) for  M Tech, GATE or in the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED 2016/2017) for M Des, and GATE 2015/2016/2017 or CAT 2017/GMAT  for M Mgt, and possess the valid score as on 1st August 2017.

Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru Integrated Ph.D Admissions 2017

Candidates with a keen sense of scientific enquiry, who wish to pursue advanced research in frontier areas of Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences can apply to this Intergradted Ph.D degree programme. Experience shows that students entering this program save nearly a year compared to those who go for a 2 years Master’s degree program elsewhere and then join the Institute for a Ph D program.  Each year, the Institute admits 50 to 60  students (15 to 18 in Biological Sciences, 15 to 18 in Chemical Sciences, 15 to 18 in Physical Sciences and 12 to 15 in Mathematical Sciences) under this program.  The program consists of flexible course work, an internship-type laboratory training (wherein ample opportunities exist for the candidate to acquire basic experimental skills and familiarity with advanced techniques for research), a research project to demonstrate attainment of a high degree of scientific ability followed by advanced research leading to a Ph D thesis on a specific topic.

A candidate with first class in B Sc or an equivalent degree with Chemistry as one of the main subjects with Mathematics at the PUC or Plus 2 level is eligible to apply.

The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.

The short-listing of candidates for interview is done based on the performance in JAM 2017. Interviews are held during 31 May, 1 and 2, June 2017. Selection will be based on the combined performance in the Test and in the Interview.

Candidates who seek admission to the Ph D (Integrated) programmes at IISc should qualify in JAM 2017 and must submit the IISc online application during February/March 2017. The JAM result must be updated online immediately after the JAM results are announced. 

Candidates who have cleared JEST 2017 and seek admission to the Ph D (Integrated) programme in Physical Sciences are also eligible to apply.

The interview letters for the short-listed candidates will be sent by email at least 2 weeks in advance. Such candidates shall make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post. TA (second class sleeper class train fare) will be paid to all the candidates who attend the interview. The SC/ST candidates are invited to come to the Institute one week before the interview date and interact with the faculty members of the Institute.

My experience at IISC

My qualifications are I cleared GATE (RANK 47), CSIR NET(RANK 12). IISC is the best research institute in India for doing Ph.D. You have to clear NET to be eligible. But you can fill up form for the admission process before the NET results are out. There is IISC entrance also. Then there are at least two rounds of rigours interview. Only then you are given opportunity to join Iisc.
