Because it is a government college fee is heavily subsidised and it cost me only about 35k per semester whereas private college with similar facilities would suck the fuck out of your pocket.
Course is awesome, There is lots of flexibility to choose many electives from various departments. Courses are light and exams test basic understanding of subject to it is very easy to pass. M.tech part requires doing a thesis which helps in getting in depth knowledge of subject.
The fee structure was around 40000 per semester (including hostel accommodation). It is quite expensive if we consider it with other government funded colleges in India. But the good news is that education loans are easily available. There are also plethora of scholarship opportunities for deserving cadidates, mostly on the basis of their economic status and academic performance.
Fees had definitely increased after the implementation of new rules by the HRD ministry but i still think it is feasible and justified with respect to the facilities that we get here . Also it is still very much below the fees of good private engineering colleges in india.
Course curriculum in IIT kanpur is very well designed and follows a similar structure as followed in MIT. Every branch has sufficient elective courses which you can take from any of the branches. This is meant to promote interdisciplinary learning.
Total fees including hostel is about Rs 57800 per semester for general/obc category and 12800 for st/sc. And remember this fees also include caution money which is refundable. So you have to submit caution money about 1000 which will be refund after passout from the college. Also you have to pay mess fees which is about 12000 per semester.
IIT approaches student learning assessment at the program level. For each program (defined as the combination of a degree-level and major, for example a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering), the program faculty identify a set of program-level student learning goals.
At my time fee structure was feasible but right now I think it's expensive. But money doesn't matter in your studies. In campus, we have banks which provide loan very easily. So the campus have resources for each and every thing. At my time time fees was around 37k per semester but right now it is 100k per semester.
Course curriculum is very soothing for each student like if you want to go in research in your department as well as in other department (if you have interest in other department rather than yours) then in India, there is no other place like this.
Until 2015 the fee is feasible but from 2016 its expensive 2016 fee structure, Tuition fee about 2,30,000 and hostel and fees about 30,000 but there are many fee waviers. Reserved candidates get a fee wavier about 75% off and also the students with less annual income get fee waviers.
Fee structure is on an overall basis is quite feasible. As the amount of facilities you get is nothing compared to what they charge you. The fee structure for the newer batch has increased I guess for us it was 36000 per semester which did not included the hostel food charges.
IIT Kanpur is known best for its Research projects. There are numerous research projects ongoing in campus. B tech generally take part less in the research projects but that is just a vague generalization. Sophomore year has a altogether internship program for research known as SURGE. There are state of the art research facilities available.
Merit-cum-Means Scholarships for Undergraduate students. Students receive full tuition waiver, and pocket allowance of Rs 1000 pm for the duration of the program. This is merit based scholarship, hence, the recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.5.
The undergraduate programs have two components. The first component is the core program common to all students and is carefully planned to give the students a solid foundation of general education in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences, Technical Arts, and Humanities and Social Sciences.
It was quite decent back when I was studying. It was Rs. 19,000 per semester for tuition. Mess food would cost around 1200. But now I hear it has gone up 5 fold, but I don't have the figures. You can get this online.
The course was almost entirely geared toward a career in research. This is not a good thing because the feedback from industry and careers students went into was not existent.
That time fees was very reasonable in 2004, This was around Rs. 8000/ per semester. We used to get Rs. 5000/- p.m. of scholarship so fees could be managed from the stipend itself.
Excellent overall.Few courses were missing because of faculty limitation in few areas. A more courses could have been there. Semiconductor Fabrication, Device Physics, Advanced analog course, Simulation .
