Allahabad University, established on 23rd September  1887, is the fourth oldest university in India. Allahabad University currently offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in various specializations of science, art, commerce, management, computer application, and law.

University of Allahabad conducts Post Graduate Admission Test (PGAT) a combined entrance test to offers admission in various courses such as:

  • M.A
  • M.Sc
  • M.Com.
  • M. Tech.
  • M.F.A.
  • M.P.A.
  • M.P.Ed.

Candidates seeking admission in PG course will be made through PGAT. Candidates can visit the official website of the university and can apply online by filling the application form. The application fee varies upon the course opted by the candidate.

Admission Process in Brief:

  • The entrance test will be conducted online.
  • The test will be divided into two sections namely Section A and Section B.
  • Section A will be common to all PGAT applicants and Section B will be based on the subject in which students want to take admission.
  • Section A will be based on the General Aptitude test that will be common to all disciplines of PGAT.
  • In Section B there will be a subject proficiency test. The test will be based on the subject in which candidates want to take admission.

How To Apply

Candidates seeking admission in PG course through PGAT, have to fill the online application form available on the university’s official website.

  1. Registration: Candidates must log on to the official website and select the desired program.
  2. Fill and Submit Application Form: Candidates have to fill their details such as name, address and other required information correctly in PGAT form.
  3. Upload The Scanned Photograph and Signature: Candidates must upload the photograph and signature at the requisite place in the Application form.
  4. Submit Application Form: After filling all the details candidates have to submit their application form for the PGAT test.
  5. Application Fees: Pay the application fees online by following the given steps:
  • Click on Pay Online.
  • The candidate will be redirected to the HDFC payment gateway.
  • Select the payment option (Debit/Credit card or Net banking)
  • Fill the required details and submit the fees.

  • The candidate may apply for a maximum of five subjects based on his/ her eligibility. Candidates will be provided a computer at the time of the entrance test.
  • Once the candidate submits the application form, s/he cannot withdraw from Entrance.


Eligibility For M.A. Course:



M.A. (Ancient History, Medieval & Modern History, Philosophy, Political Science, Education, English Literature/ Language, Hindi, Mass Communication, Theatre & Film)

Graduation Degree required for all specialization.

M.A. (Development Studies)

Candidates must have 50% marks in 10th and 12th and 55% marks or equivalent grade Bachelor in Social Science/B.Com/ B.A. Economics/ B.Sc. (Agriculture)/ Bachelor in Development Studies.

M.A. (Sociology, Sanskrit, Urdu)

B.A. Part III Examination or Candidates must have studied B.A. (Honours) degree in concern subjects.

M.A. (Economics)

B.A. (Honours) Examination with the same subject or Candidates must have studied Mathematics/ Statistics/ Economics in B.A./B.Sc.

M.A. in Music (Vocal, Sitar, Tabla)

Only female candidates are eligible for this subject. B.A. Part III Examination or the B.A. (Honours) Examination with the same subject in which admission is sought. Candidates who have passed the Sangeet Praveen/Alankar/Nipun Examination recognized by the University as equivalent to the B.A. Examination in Music are also eligible for admission to M.A. in Music

M.A. (Painting)

B.A. Part III Examination or the B.A. (Honours) Examination with the same subject in which admission is sought as the main subject. B.F.A. (Four Year Course) or the B.V.A. (Four Year Course) is also eligible.

M.Music. (Vocal, Sitar, Tabla)

B.Mus. (Three year Course) Examination or the B.A. Part III Examination with Music as one of the subjects, or the B.A. (Honours) Examination with Music as the main subject, or the Sangeet Praveen/Alankar/Nipun (or similar) Examination recognized by the University as equivalent to the B.A. Examination in Music.

Eligibility For M.Com.:  

  • Candidate must have studied B.Com./B.Sc./B.Sc. (Honours) .

Eligibility For  M.Tech (Earth System Science):

  • Master’s degree in Physical Sciences/Mathematical Sciences/ Chemical Sciences/ Life Sciences/ Geosciences/ any cognate discipline or a B. Tech./B.E. with marks/CPI 55% marks/ 5.5 (on a 10 point scale) (50% for SC/ST candidates) for appearing in the entrance exam.
  • Candidates working in a research and development organization on a permanent basis in the field of Earth System/Cognate disciplines may be sponsored by his/ her employer for direct admission to the M. Tech. programme.


  • 15 % of the total seats in each subject/course shall be reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
  • 7.5 % of the total seats in each subject/course shall be reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
  • 27 % of the total seats in each subject/course shall be reserved for candidates belonging to the Other Backward Caste (OBC) category.
  • 2 % of the total seats in each subject/course shall be allotted under Sports Quota.

Admission Process

Exam Pattern

The entire test will be for a duration of 1-3 hours, based on subjects applied for. The minimum qualifying marks in Entrance Test are 30% for Unreserved Category, 27% for OBC. There will no negative marking. 

PGAT-I test will be conducted Online as well as Offline. 2. PGAT-II test will be conducted Online only.

Each PGAT test of 300 marks will consist of 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

General Guidelines-

  • For admission to any subject of M.A./M.Sc. or to M.Com., preference shall be given to fresh graduates (i.e. candidates who have recently passed the qualifying graduate examination for the academic year) over graduates of preceding academic years.
  • Accumulative penalty at the rate of 5% of the Standardized Score shall be applied for every gap year in case of non-fresh graduates, subject to the maximum discount of 15%.

  • HSC certificate and mark sheet 
  • UG certificate and mark sheet
  • Transfer certificate
  • Migration certificate
  • Caste certificate
  • 2 recent size photographs

Hi Rajasekhar, registration process for PGAT is expected to start in the month of April, 2020. Exam is scheduled to be conducted in May, 2020 (tentatively).

Hi Muskan, The eligibility for the m.a in music is Student must be a graduate in any discipline from a recognized University. The admission is based on the Score in PGAT followed by university-based counselling.
