IIT Patna M.Tech Admission 2020: , Dates, Eligibility, Application Process

IIT Patna (Indian Institute of Technology, Patna) is an autonomous institute that offers courses in science, engineering and technology.  It offers Full Time – M.Tech (Master of Technology) program in 8 specialization with durartion of 2 years. Check IIT Patna Course Fees

B.Tech in related field with atleast 60% marks is the basic requirement for the admission in IIT Patna M.Tech Programmes.

The registration for admission to M.Tech program is done in online mode in the month of March on official website ( Candidates are required to fill the appliction form along with the valid GATE Score and pay the registration fees through online mode for acceptance of form.

Candidate also needs to register himself at the COAP portal. If he fails to register in any of the portal then he will not be able to take admission.

The selection is done on the basis of GATE score and Personal Interview. Shortlisted candidates on the basis of GATE score and interview round will get admission to M.Tech program in IIT Patna. Institute will release the merit list of shortlisted candidates for the admission on official website. 

IIT Patna M.Tech Application Process

Candidates who wish to apply can submit their applications on institute’s website. Applications received after the due date will not be accepted.

  • Students applying for more than one program, have to submit the separate application for each program.
  • Applicants have to pay an application fee of INR 300 at the time of online registration. The same can be paid in online mode through net banking, credit card, and debit card.
  • The hard copy of duly filled application form along with all the required documents and e-receipt send it to the address given below:

Steps to Apply Online:

  1. Visit the official website i.e.
  2. Click on the admission link
  3. Register by using your email id and password
  4. Login after the confirmation of email
  5. Fill application form with required information
  6. Upload the scan copy of signature and photograph
  7. The image size should be less than 50kb
  8. Save the application form
  9. Pay application fee either of the available mode
  10. Take the print out of application form for future reference
  11. Send application form to the prescribed address

  • Mark sheet of graduation
  • GATE Admit card
  • GATE score card
  • Caste certificate (if applicable)
  • PwD certificate (if applicable)

COAP Registration

Applicant after clearing GATE exam needs to register on Common offer Acceptance Portal. This is a mandatory step if one wants to take admission in any of the IITs for M.Tech program. At this portal, after applying on IITs, candidate can check and accept the offer made to him for the admission.

IIT Patna M.Tech Eligibility Criteria

To seek admission to M.Tech program, students have to qualify the complete eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • Applicants should have graduation degree in relevant field from a recognized university.
  • Students must have at least 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale in graduation (For SC/ ST 55% marks).
  • B.Tech students from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 8.0 need not appear for GATE.

M.Tech in Computer Science and EngineeringCandidates must have passed B.Tech. /B.E. degree in Computer Science/ Information Technology. Candidates must also have a valid GATE score in CS.
M.Tech in Communication System EngineeringStudents should have B.Tech./ B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering/ Electronics and Communication.
M.Tech in Mechanical EngineeringCandidates must have passed B.Tech./ B.E. in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Automobile, Production, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering. They must have a valid GATE score in AE, ME and PI.
M.Tech in Civil and Infrastructure EngineeringApplicants having B.Tech/ B.E. degree or equivalent in Civil, Infrastructure, Construction, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering. They should have valid GATE score in CE, ME, EE.
M.Tech in Materials Science and EngineeringCandidates must have passed B.Tech./ B.E. degree in Materials, Metallurgical & Materials, Chemical, Ceramics, Polymer/Rubber, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or MSc in Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Applied Chemistry. They must have a valid GATE score in paper MT, CH, ME, EE, EC, XE

Admission Process

Candidates will be shortlisted for the M.Tech program on the basis of their GATE score. Then, there will be an Interview round conducted for final selection of the candidates.

  • GATE exam carries 70% weightage and Interview round carries 30% weightage. 
  • Candidates have to report at the IIT Patna Campus for Personal Interview (PI) round.
  • In the PI round, the skills that the candidate will be assessed for will be Basic Science, Engineering and other related areas.
  • Applicants who will qualify both stages of selection process will be considered for admission to M.Tech program.
