Thiruvalluvar Universityis situated in Vellore and is an affiliating University. The University currently has seven departments, namely, Tamil, English, Economics, Zoology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Bio-Technology. Thiruvalluvar University offers M.Phil. and PhD programs in 7 different specializations, through these departments.
The minimum eligibility for admission to both M.Phil. and PhD program at Thiruvalluvar University is a Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline. The University takes admission in M.Phil. program in two categories, i.e., Full-time, and Part-time. In case of PhD programs the categories are Full Time, Part Time, and Independent Research Scholars.
The Thiruvalluvar University intakes students to their PhD programs in four sessions throughout the year while for M.Phil. program the admission is conducted in only one session. The University conducts an entrance exam for admission to both the research programs. For admission to PhD courses, a candidate has to undergo an additional personal interview round after appearing for the entrance test.

The candidate seeking admission to M.Phil. program at Thiruvalluvar University, should apply in the prescribed format only. Candidates are advised to first ascertain the number of vacancies available in their desired program and department with the concerned Department and Supervisor at the University. The application form for M.Phil. program can be obtained in any of the following ways:
A candidate applying for M.Phil. at TU is required to make two copies of their application form.
First copy: The original copy of the application form is to be submitted to the recognized department of the university / affiliated college, where you seek admission. In case of downloaded application, it is to be submitted directly to the recognized department of the University / affiliated college along with the Xerox copy of the DD for Rs.200/- for the cost of application and registration Fee.
Second Copy: A photocopy of the original application or the downloaded application is to be directly sent to Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, along with the original DD for Rs.200/- for the cost of application and Registration Fee, from a Nationalized Bank, drawn in favour of the Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University, payable at Vellore.

The admission to PhD programs is conducted in four sessions every year. The complete application form with the necessary certificates for admission to PhD programs must reach the University office before the first working day of January, April, July, and October for provisional registration. The candidate is expected to retain and send the original Bank Challan with UTR number with the application form with a requisition indicating clearly, the programme (Ph.D.) in either full time or part time basis.
The candidate is required to send two copies of their application form. The details are as below:
First Submission: The original application is to be submitted to the research department of the university / research department of the affiliated college, where you seek admission. In case of downloaded application, it is to be submitted directly to the university research department / research department of the affiliated college along with the photocopy of the Bank Challan for Rs. 200/- towards the cost of application.
Second Submission: The photocopy of the original application or downloaded application is to be directly sent to the University, along with the original Bank Challan for Rs.200/- towards the cost of application.
The applications should be accompanied with attested photocopies of the following certificates and forwarded by the HOD and Principal of the affiliated college / Dean of the University.
For admission to M.Phil. program a candidate must hold a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline. A candidate should apply for admission to the M.Phil. program only after qualifying their postgraduation degree. Also candidates who have completed their postgraduatioon degree with less than 17 years of total duration of study are not eligible to apply for this program. The category-wise eligibility is given below:
For M.Phil. (Full-Time): A candidate must have a minimum of 55% marks for general category and 50% marks for SC/ST category, in post-graduate degree. Candidates who are working as Full-time Research Assistants/ Project Fellows/JRF/SRFin time bound research schemes or one year duration or more in University Departments, Research Departments of affiliated colleges/ Recognized Research Institutions are also eligible for admission.
For M.Phil. (Part-Time): Candidate must be employed in any concerned organization or institution situated within the jurisdiction of the State of Tamil Nadu or Research Institutions situated outside the State of Tamil Nadu recognized by Thiruvalluvar University with a minimum of 55% of marks for general category and 50% marks for SC/ST category, in the Master’s Degree.
Teachers working in universities / affiliated colleges / Polytechnics / Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools approved by State Board or Central Board of Secondary Education or Education instructors of I.A.F are also eligible to apply for M.Phil., (PT). Such candidates will have to produce a no objection Certificate issued by the DCE / Registrar (for teachers of Self-financing institutions) /Director of Technical Education (for teachers of Polytechnics) / CEO (for teachers of schools).

There are certain basic eligibility criteria which a candidate applying in any of the above categories must fulfill.
A candidate must have a Master's degree with not less than 55% of marks and 50% marks for SC/ST category or a CGPA of 5.51 and above in the 10.00 point scale under CBCS, under the faculties of Arts, Science, Fine Arts, Indian and other languages, Management etc.
A Research Fellow working in research projects funded by external agencies such as DST/ DOD/ DOEn / UGC / CSIR and similar national/ international and state level organizations in this University/ research centres/ affiliated colleges can also apply.

Your selection will be based on the marks obtained in the basic qualifying examinations (50% of marks) and the entrance examination (50% of marks) conducted by the institute.
The paper will have multiple-choice type questions for 50 marks. The Rank List based on the marks obtained will be prepared for a maximum of 100 marks accordingly.
You will be selected based on a two-step process: Entrance Test and Interview.
The total marks secured in the Entrance test (40 marks) and interview (10 marks) put together amounts to 50 and the remaining 50 marks is for the qualifying PG examination in the subject concerned and the rank list will be prepared for a maximum of 100 marks, accordingly. You should secure at least 25 marks out of 50 marks put together in the Entrance written test and interview.
The test will examine Research aptitude, Depth/grasp of the subject, intellectual ability and general knowledge of the candidates. The Departmental Research Committee of the concerned Department may design and set the question paper entrance written examination comprising of objective questions for 40 marks.
Exemptions: If you have qualified UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination NET/SLET/GATE and teacher fellowship from the proposed entrance examination, you will be exempted from writing the Entrance Test. But you should undertake the interview. For such candidates the total marks shall be 60 only.
