Established in 1949, Karnatak University is an UGC affiliated institution imparting quality education in the faculty of Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, Science and Technology and Social Sciences. Housing over 40 PG Departments in its campus, the university offers 50 PG Courses, 4 advanced diplomas and 28 diplomas, 11 certificate courses, 26 M.Phil. and 42 Ph.D programmes.
The university offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in regular full-time as well as part-time mode under the following departments:
Candidates with the relevant qualifying degree i.e. masters degree are eligible to apply for admission to PhD programme. Selection of candidates will be done on the basis of marks scored in the entrance examination, conducted by the university itself. Application forms are generally available from mid-february and candidates can complete the registration process as per the guidelines within the stipulated time.

Candidate should have studied under 10+2+3(or 10+2+5) pattern ofeducation and should have obtained Master's Degree in the subject concerned or in similar subject while securing a minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent grade).
Those who possess a Post-Graduate Degree from a recognized University with 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/Category 1/Physically challenged candidates) and fall under sponsored candidates category are also eligible to apply for the Ph.D., Degree Programme.
In case you have been appointed on regular basis prior to March 31, 1992 as teachers, librarians and physical education personnel in Colleges and University Departments, the minimum marks shall be 50% (45% for SC/ST/Category 1) provided they are continuing in service at the time of submission of application for registration.
Note: If the results of Master's Degree are declared in the form of grades/credits/ cumulative points in their marks cards, then such grades/points shall be converted into percentages to calculate the minimum eligibility criteria as specified.
How to apply
Application forms andthe bank challan can be downloaded from the official university website or obtained in person from the university office.
Candidates should submit duly filled-in applications along with necessary documents (including the original copy of the challan for Application Processing fee and Entrance Test fees, if applicable) and required fees to the Chairman of the concerned Department on or before the last date.
Candidate should dispatch the fees in State Bank of India/Syndicate Bank of KUD by downloading the appropriate challan (online/offline).
If the candidate has to claim for reservation, then he/she shall submit copies of the Caste Certificates, wherever applicable, issued by the Tahasildar during the period of 5 years prior to the date of this notification along with the application form.
An entrance test of 100 marks will be conducted by the university consisting of multiple choice questions. Each question will carry 1 mark and the syllabus would constitute of Research Methodology of 50% marks and Cognate/Core subjects of 50% marks of the P.G. Department conducting the Entrance Test.
The Merit list of the selected students will be prepared by giving 50% weightage to the entrance test scored and 50% weightage for the score at Master’s Degree level. If the candidate has secured a minimum of 50% marks ( 45% marks in case of SC/ST/Category 1 candidates) aggregate at the entrance examination, he/she will be considered qualified for the merit list.
The admission test is exempted for all those who have qualified the National Eligibility Test such as NET (National level entrance test) / SLET( State level entrance test) / GATE (Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering)/ JRF(Junior Research Fellowship) / FIP (Formative Instructional practices)/ QIP (Quality Improvement Programme) Fellows and those working under specialized funded projects. Government sponsored foreign students are also exempted from the Entrance Test. Such students shall seek registration for Ph.D. programme directly after consulting the desired research guide.
Candidates who will be shortlisted must appear for interview and deliver a seminar or group discussion or any such method of evaluation as per the requirement by the Admission Committee of the University.
Candidates who claim reservation must submit the copies of the Caste Certificates, wherever applicable, issued by the Tahasildar during the period of 5 years prior to the date of this notification along with the application form
To eliminate social exclusion and promote social justice, seats are reserved for SC/ST, Cat-I, Minorities, OBC and BC categories in accordance with the policy of the State Government
One seat each is reserved for the children of ex-servicemen, freedom fighters, physically challenged and sportsmen
