The Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Deemed University, the third oldest educational Institute in the country established on October 6, 1821 is presently ranked 40th amongst the top 45 Universities of the country and 11th in terms of reputation. This is the only University in the country specializing in past and present Heritage of the country and is globally reputed for quality teaching and research in the specialized fields. Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute has three full-fledged Departments, namely Archaeology, Linguistics and Sanskrit and Lexicography.

There are three post-graduate and three post-doctoral courses taught in this university along with post graduate diploma in archaeology and certificate course in research methodology.

The duration of the course of M Phil will be of 1.5 years of which first semester will consist of Research Methodology course and three subject papers suggested by the research guide, whereas the duration of M.A. course is two years.

Eligibility Criteria

Master of Arts [MA] (Archaeology)

You need to have a B.A. degree, with Ancient Indian History, Culture and / or Archaeology / History / Sanskrit / Prakrit / Pali / Anthropology / Geography / Fine Arts / Architecture as a subject with a minimum of 55% marks or B+ or equivalent grade of a recognized University Or you must have a B.Sc. degree, with Anthropology / Geography / Geology / Botany / Physics / Chemistry as a major subject with a minimum of 55% marks or B+ or equivalent grade of a recognized University.

Master of Arts [MA] (Linguistics)

You need to have a B.A. degree, with a classical or modern Indian or foreign language as a major subject, with a minimum of 55% marks or B+ or equivalent grade of a recognized University; or a B.Sc. degree with Physics / Biology / Anthropology with a minimum of 55% marks or B+ or equivalent grade of a recognized University; or a Departmental Research Project or a Graduate degree In Engineering or Medicine.

Master of Arts [MA] (Sanskrit & Lexicography)

You need to pass B. A. (or its equivalent) or B. Sc. with at least one paper in Sanskrit Language.

M.Phil. (History and Archaeology) , M.Phil. (Linguistics) & M.Phil. (Sanskrit)

You need a postgraduate degree in Archaeology/Linguistic/Sanskrit and Lexicography to apply for M.Phil. Programme.

How to Apply

A student seeking admission to MA and M.Phil course shall apply on a prescribed form. You must fill the application form in your own handwriting and with a passport-size photo affixed on it along with Xerox copies of the documents listed below, and send it to the Academic Section of the Institute.

Documents needed along with application form:

  • Migration Certificate (No objection certificate from the University last attended)
  • Passing/Degree certificate of the last qualifying degree examination
  • Mark-list of the last qualifying degree examination
  • Character certificate (from the head of the Institute from which the student has obtained his qualifying degree.
  • Documentary proof for date of birth
  • Gap certificate (if applicable)
  • No objection certificate from the employer (if employed)

Selection Process

Master of Arts [MA] (Archaeology) , Master of Arts [MA] (Linguistics) & Master of Arts [MA] (Sanskrit & Lexicography)

For admission to M.A/M.Phil. course you need to apply on a prescribed form. The application form should be duly filled by you in your handwriting and a passport –size photo affixed together with attested copies of the documents listed below, must reach the Assistant Registrar, Academic Section of the Institute by 10th June.

  • Marks-lists of the following qualifying examinations: SSC, HSC, B.A. / B.Sc/M.A.
  • Character certificate from the Head of the Department / from which you have obtained your qualifying degree.
  • If you are a foreign student seeking admission in M.A. or an Indian Student seeking admission in M.Phil. , you need to submit a medical fitness certificate.
