Mumbai University offers Ph.D in the concerned subjects of research of the faculty of arts, commerce, science, law, and technology. The duration of the program is a minimum of 3 years. 

Mumbai University invites applications for admission to the Ph.D. Program every year in the month of April. Minimum Eligibility to apply for Ph.D. is a Masters degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.

Applicants who have qualified in GATE/SET/NET/(JRF)examinations are exempt from appearing for PET. Applicants who hold a Teacher Fellowship with CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR and DBT are also exempted.

Mumbai University Application Process

Application Fee: Application Fee for General Category students is INR 1000 and INR 500 for reserved category. Candidates can pay the relevant fees by one of the following payment methods:

  • Demand Draft in the name of ‘Finance & Accounts Officer of the University of Mumbai’ payable at Mumbai.
  • By cash in Room No 13, Ground Floor, University of Mumbai, Fort, Mumbai 400030 

The duly filled form along with enclosed DD / Receipt of such payment must be paid to Thesis Section Room No 129, 1st Floor, University of Mumbai, Fort, Mumbai-400032.

Candidates seeking exemption from PET can skip the above process, and directly apply through the process given below.

For Admission to Ph.D. Programme:

  • Applications to the Ph.D program are made directly to the concerned Research Centre affiliated with Mumbai University.
  • Candidates need to pay an Application fee of INR 100 in the form of a Demand Draft or cash to the concerned recognized Research Centre of the University of Mumbai within 15 working days from the date of the declaration of the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) results.

Mumbai University Eligibility Criteria

A candidate should fulfill any of the following criteria in order to apply for the Ph.D. research program at Mumbai University:

  • Candidate should hold a Master’s Degree/ M.Phil. Degree in relevant discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 55% marks (general category) or 50% marks (Reserved category).
  • The applicant should be a teacher having full-time teaching experience of at least two years in Degree College or five years in Junior College.
  • The candidate must be a graduate and working in National Laboratories/Institutes/Government/ Private Organization, nominated/sponsored by the respective employer.
  • NET/SET/GATE/JRF qualified candidates of the apex bodies in higher/technical/ professional education such as CSIR/UGC/ICAR or other equivalent examination.

Note: Only Candidates belonging to backward class of the State of Maharashtra state are eligible to claim seat under reserved category.

The reservation policy will be as per the norms prescribed by the Government of Maharashtra.

Mumbai University Admission Process

Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D program are granted admission on the basis of a valid score of Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET). PET is further followed by a Personal Interview at the Research Centre. The syllabus for the Mumbai University  PhD PET exam consists of various topics in compulsory/core subject and papers of postgraduate degree level of the exam prescribed by Mumbai University for the subject. The question papers will comprise of three types of questions

  • Objective type of Questions: 40 marks
  • Short answers: 30 marks
  • Long answers: 30 marks

In order to qualify for the interview, candidates need to secure a minimum of 50 marks in PET. The result of this exam is valid for a period of three years.


  • GATE/SET/NET/JRF qualified candidates and holders of teachers’ fellowships of apex bodies like CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR/DBT are exempted from PET.
  • Candidates holding an M. Phil. Degree from a recognized University are also exempted from the exam.

Hi Birju, sorry but you are not eligible for PET as applicant must have teaching experience in order to be eligible for this exam.

Hi Susha, admission to all the P.hD courses is done on the basis of score in entrance exam followed by an interview conducted by the university.
