Mumbai University M.Phil. Admissions 2017

Established in 1857Mumbai University (MU) is one of the first three universities in India with several private colleges in and around Mumbai affiliated to it. MU has three campuses in Mumbai and is one of the largest universities in the world in terms of the number of students. In addition to regular undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses, the university offers research programmes along with diplomas and certificate courses. 

Those seeking admission can download the application form and submit them upon completion to the university office. Candidates must attach supporting documents and required processing fee along with the duly filled-in applications to complete the registration process.

The University offers M.Phil programme under the Faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law and Finance in multiple disciplines including sociology, philosophy, education and commerce. Only candidates with the relevant qualifying degree are eligible to apply for the programme. Candidates will be admitted to the course based on their performace in Written Entrance Exam followed by a Personal Interview, conducted by the respective Faculty of the university.

Eligibility Criteria

M.Phil. (Law)

Candidate must possess Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with minimum 55% aggregate of marks (in case of general category) and 50% marks (in case of reserved category) from a recognised University.

M.Phil. (Sociology)

  • Candidate must possess Masters Degree (MA) in any discipline under Social Sciences with minimum 55% aggregate of marks.
  • Candidates from other disciplines may apply and will be considered on case basis, subject to clearance of an Aptitude Test. 
  • Candidates who have qualified M.Phil. Entrance test / GATE/UGC-JRF/UGC-NET/UGC-SET are eligible for admission


How to apply

M.Phil. (Sociology) , M.Phil. (Commerce) & M.Phil. (Law)

Candidates can download the prescribed application form along with the eligibility form available at the official university website

Duly filled-in forms containing the required personal and educational details must be submitted in person to the concerned department office.

Application Fee: Candidate should pay the following fee in cash at the time of submission of application forms:

  • Rs. 220 (eligibility fee) if you are from universities in Maharashtra
  • Rs. 320 (eligibility fee) if you are from other University (other than Maharashtra state)
  • Rs. 220 (enrollment fee) if you are from other University (other than Maharashtra state)

Enclosures: Candidate should attach the self-certified copies of the following documents:

  • Graduation Mark sheets & Degree Certificate
  • Post-graduation Part – I & II Mark sheets and Degree Certificate
  • Caste certificates (in case of reserved category)

Candidates should submit completed applications, along with the required documents and fee, in person only at the respective Department of the Mumbai University between 11.00 a.m. – 01.00 p.m. and 02.00 p.m. - 04.00 p.m. on all weekdays and first, third and fifth Saturdays. 

Note: Applications sent by post will not be accepted by the university.


Selection Process

M.Phil. (Law)

  • Candidates will be shortlisted for admission to M.Phil programme on the basis of their performance in the Written Entrance Examination (80 marks) + Oral Interview (20 marks).The total passing marks will be 50 including marks secured in Written & Oral Examination.
  • Both the examinations will be conducted by the respective Department of the University. The syllabus for the written exam will be based on your master’s degree course.

M.Phil. (Sociology)

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of marks scored in the entrance test and personal interview, both conducted by the university itself.
