Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly the University of Pune was founded in 1948. The University is home to 46 academic departments. It has been given the highest “A” rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council for its overall performance. The University has now been ranked 3rd in India by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The University has affiliated colleges, departments, and research institutes, which are primarily in Pune. More than 70 Research Institutions have been recognised by the University.

The University offers research programs in different subjects and interdisciplinary areas leading to degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). It offers an opportunity to work in a recognized place of research that include university departments, research institutes and affiliated colleges affiliated by the university. The selection for the programme is based on the written test conducted by the university.  However, those who have qualified for national level entrance tests and fellowship are exempted from appearing for the entrance test.

The University invites applications for admission to the Ph.D. Programme for the academic year 2017-18. The application process begins from October 14th, 2017 (tentative) and must be submitted to the University by November 6th 2017 (tentative). The written test will be held in two stages with one paper on November 17th, 2017 (tentative) followed by the second paper on December 8th, 2017 (tentative).

Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. (Atmospheric Sciences) , Ph.D. (Biotechnology) & Ph.D. (Botany)

You should fulfil any of the following conditions:

  • You should have passed your post Graduate Degree (Master’s Degree) Examination with at least 50% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) for general category and 45% marks for reserved category of Maharashtra State only.
  • You should have passed your Post-Graduate Degree (Master’s Degree) Examination Law Faculty with at least 55% marks for general category and 50% marks for reserve category of Maharashtra State only.

  • Attested Xerox copy of Mark list of Master's Degree
  • Attested Xerox copy of the Caste Certificate in case of Reserved Categories (if applicable)
  • Attested Xerox copy of the Medical Certificate issued by Civil Surgeon in case of Persons with Disabilities (P.H.) candidates (if applicable)
  • Attested copy of previous result of Ph. D. Entrance Examination Paper- I (if applicable)

Selection Process

You will be selected on the basis of Ph.D. Entrance Examination. The exam consists of two papers.

Paper-I consists of 3 Parts: Logical Reasoning, Numerical Ability; and Reasoning and Language Aptitude. The paper contains a total of 100 questions and 100 marks in total. All the questions and multiple choice type questions where each correct answer carries 1 Mark. There is no negative marking for an incorrect answer.

You should obtain a minimum of 50% marks in Paper 1 in case of general category and 45% in case of reserved category. It is only when you qualify Paper 1, will you be able to sit for Paper 2 of the Entrance Exam.

Paper 2: This will be the subject specific test of a total of 100 marks which will consist of 2 parts: Multiple Choice Questions for 20 marks and Theoretical / Descriptive Questions for 80 marks.  .

Exemptions: You will be exempted from giving the entrance exam if you fulfil the following conditions:

  • If you have qualified in GATE (valid score) /GPAT (valid score)/ SETA {ET/JRF/SRF Examinations of apex bodies such as CSIR-UGC /ICRA/ICMR/DBT and DST inspire fellowship only.
  • If you have an M. Phil degree completed from any Statutory Recognized University in a relevant subject
  • If you have already qualified in Ph.D. Entrance Examination Paper- I conducted by University of Pune on February 10th,2010 and December 17th,2011

The reservation policy will be as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India.
