Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly known as the University of Pune, was founded in 1948. The university is home to 46 academic departments and has more than 70 Research Institutions recognised to it. University of Pune has several affiliated colleges, departments, and research institutes, located primarily in Pune.

The university offers research programs in different subjects and interdisciplinary areas leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree. For admission to Ph.D, candidates should possess a Master's degree with at least 55% aggregate in marks. Selection of the candidate is based on the written test conducted by the university. However, those who have qualified for national level entrance tests and fellowship are exempted from appearing in the entrance test. The university has commenced application process for admission to the Ph.D. Program for the academic year. The application process begins and duly filled-in forms must be submitted to the university. Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. (Atmospheric Sciences) , Ph.D. (Biotechnology) & Ph.D. (Botany)

Candidate should fulfill any of the following conditions:

  • Candidate should have passed post-graduate degree (Master’s Degree) examination with at least 50% marks or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) for general category and 45% marks for reserved category of Maharashtra State only.
  • Candidate should have passed post-graduate degree (Master’s Degree) examination Law Faculty with at least 55% marks for general category and 50% marks for reserve category of Maharashtra State only.

  • Attested Xerox copy of the Medical Certificate issued by Civil Surgeon in case of Persons with Disabilities (P.H.) candidates (if applicable)
  • Attested copy of previous result of Ph. D. Entrance Examination Paper- I (if applicable)

Selection Process

You will be selected on the basis of Ph.D. Entrance Examination. The exam consists of two papers.

Paper-I consists of 3 Parts: Logical Reasoning, Numerical Ability; and Reasoning and Language Aptitude. The paper contains a total of 100 questions and 100 marks in total. All the questions and multiple choice type questions where each correct answer carries 1 Mark. There is no negative marking for an incorrect answer.

You should obtain a minimum of 50% marks in Paper 1 in case of general category and 45% in case of reserved category. It is only when you qualify Paper 1, will you be able to sit for Paper 2 of the Entrance Exam.

Paper 2: This will be the subject specific test of a total of 100 marks which will consist of 2 parts: Multiple Choice Questions for 20 marks and Theoretical / Descriptive Questions for 80 marks.

Exemptions: Students will be exempted from giving the entrance exam if they fulfill the following conditions:

  • If the candidates have qualified in GATE (valid score) /GPAT (valid score)/ SETA {ET/JRF/SRF Examinations of apex bodies such as CSIR-UGC /ICRA/ICMR/DBT and DST inspire fellowship only.
  • If the candidates have an M. Phil degree completed from any Statutory Recognized University in a relevant subject


Reservation Criteria

The reservation policy will be as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India.
