Savitribai Phule Pune University(SPPU), formerly the University of Pune was founded in 1948. The University is home to 46 academic departments. It has been given the highest “A” rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council for its overall performance. The University has now been ranked 3rd in India by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The University has affiliated colleges, departments, and research institutes, which are primarily in Pune. More than 70 Research Institutions have been recognised by the University.

The University offers Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Degree in various disciplines. The M.Phil. Degree shall have the status of an intermediate Degree between the first Post-Graduate Degree and the Doctorate Degree. It will have both research and course components and will give the student adequate background for advanced research. The M.Phil. Course can be done either on a full-time or on a Vacational basis depending upon the availability of the programme in the Department/College.

The duration of the full-time M.Phil. Course shall be 12 months. The vacational M.Phil. Programme shall extend over a period of 24 months. The facility of vacational M.Phil. Programme shall be restricted to full-time teachers of Colleges/Universities and full-time research workers of the Recognised Institutions within the jurisdiction of the University of Pune.

The University invites Applications for admission to the M.Phil. Programme for the academic year 2017-18. The Application process starts on September 15th, 2017 (tentative) and the online submission must be done by September 25th, 2017 (tentative). The admission is through an Entrance Test conducted by the respective Departments.

Eligibility Criteria

M.Phil. (Botany) , M.Phil. (Chemistry) & M.Phil. (Communication Studies)

You should have a Master's Degree in the same or related discipline, with 50% marks for general category and 45% marks for reserved category, from a recognised University.


How to apply?

M.Phil. (Botany) , M.Phil. (Chemistry) & M.Phil. (Communication Studies)

You can download the Application Form from the University website.

You should fill in the required personal and educational details in the form.

Application Fee: You should pay the application fee of Rs. 400 for general category and Rs. 300 for reserved category through either Cash (at any branch of HDFC Bank Ltd., or Bank of Maharashtra); or Online Payment through bank transfer. Please select any one of payment modes suitable to you:

  1. If you select payment mode as Cash, you will get 2 options for bank as HDFC Bank or Bank of Maharashtra. Choose any one you wish to pay through and click on “Submit”. After this, the Bank Challan will be get generated. You should then take a printout of this challan (by clicking link "Print Challan") and pay cash in cash counter of any branch of selected bank.
  2. Online Payment: If you select payment mode as Online Payment, click on Submit, you will be get redirected to University Online Payment Gateway

Enclosures: You should enclosed following documents along with the hard copy of application forms:

  • University copy of Bank Challan
  • Attested photocopy of marksheet of Master’s Degree
  • Attested copy of the cast certificate in case of Reserved categories (if applicable)
  • Attested copy of non-creamy layer certificate (if applicable )
  • Attested copy of domicile certificate (if you are domicile of Maharashtra)
  • Attested copy of medical certificate issued by civil surgeon in case of persons with Disabilities (P.H) ( if applicable)
  • Attested copy of certificate issued by concerned authority in case of children of Defence personal / Ex- servicemen

You should then submit your Application form with the required attachments and send them to the respective University departments.


Selection Process

M.Phil. (Botany) , M.Phil. (Chemistry) & M.Phil. (Communication Studies)

You will be selected on the basis of satisfactory performance at the Master’s Degree Examination and the performance at the Entrance Examination conducted by the Department/College concerned.


Reservation Criteria

As per Government of Maharashtra Rules, 50% seats are reserved for SC, ST, DTNT, OBC and 3% seats are reserved for physically handicapped students. Also, 570 seats are reserved for children of Defence personnel /Ex-serviceman.
