Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a deemed university and also an institute of national excellence. This institution is among the few in the country today known as an institute of excellence. It has been established under the purview of the Department of Atomic Energy. Presently this institutes constitutes 4 R&D research centres and 7 institutes of study. HBNI offers post graduate courses of study and research facilities in faculties of science and engineering and health science offered at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai as Constituent institutes, among others.

The Institute invites applications for the M.Tech. And M.Phil. Admissions for the academic year. The M.Tech. Course is for a duration of 2 years and the M.Phil. Course is for a duration of 4 years. The admission to the programmes is through an all-India written screening test followed by an interview. The programmes are available in the various Constituent Institutions of HBNI. Eligiblity Criteria

Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Mechanical Engineering) , Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Chemical Engineering) & Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Computer Engineering)

You should have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology (B.E. /B.Tech.) or a Master’s degree in Science (M.Sc.) from a recognised University with minimum 50% marks.

M.Phil. (Chemical Sciences) , M.Phil. (Life Science (Zoology/Botany)) & M.Phil. (Mathematical Science)

Master’s degree in Science (M.Sc.) of a University recognized by the University Grants Commission with minimum 50% marks.

For all courses: You will also be considered eligible under the following conditions:

  • You should be an employee in DAE through a process involving screening based on performance in an all India written test conducted by BARC or GATE, and a selection interview by an expert committee nominated by BARC.  
  • If you are selected by organisations such as AERB and are nominated to attend full one year programme or some of the courses.
  • If you have been asked by your divisional management to attend some of the courses to improve your knowledge base in a specified area. You are given due credit for such courses whenever you want to enrol for a research based degree from HBNI.
  • If you are a faculty nominated by universities/ institutes in the country desirous of training them in nuclear science and engineering for all or some of the courses after your aptitude has been ascertained by expert committees nominated by BARC. 

How to apply?

M.Phil. (Chemical Sciences) , M.Phil. (Life Science (Zoology/Botany)) & Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Mechanical Engineering)

You can download the Application form online, for both programmes separately, from the Institute’s website, at the “Applications” link under the “Student Corner” tab. For both the courses, there are separate forms.

Fill the Application form with the required details and affix a self-attested photograph of 3.5 x 2.5 cm dimensions.

You should attach the following list of Enclosures with the Application form:

  • Self-attested copy for proof of Date-of-Birth
  • Self-attested copies of Mark Sheets & Degree Certificates
  • Self-attested copy of marksheet of completed course work as per suggestion of standing academic committee (Only for M.Phil. Programme)
  • Research Proposal (Only for M.Phil. Programme)

You should pay the Application Fee of Rs. 5000/- in the form of a Demand Draft in favour of Accounts Officer, HBNI payable at Mumbai.

Selection Process

M.Phil. (Chemical Sciences) , M.Phil. (Life Science (Zoology/Botany)) & Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Mechanical Engineering)

You will be selected on the basis of an All India written test conducted at the national level and approved by Academic Council.

If you are shortlisted, it will be followed by a Selection Interview by an expert committee nominated by Director of CI (Constituent Institutions).

Reservation Criteria

The reservation criteria will be as per the norms prescribed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
