Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) M.Sc. and Ph.D. Admissions 2019: Courses, Application Process, Fees

Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a deemed university and also an institute of national excellence. This institution is among the few in the country today known as an institute of excellence. It has been established under the purview of the Department of Atomic Energy. Presently this institutes constitutes 4 R&D research centres and 7 institutes of study. HBNI offers post graduate courses of study and research facilities in faculties of science and engineering and health science offered at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai as Constituent institutes, among others.

HBNI invites applications for admission to the M.Sc. (Engineering) and Ph.D. Programmes for the academic year. The programmes are available in the various Constituent Institutions of HBNI. Some research centres also run a dual degree integrated Ph.D. programme for engineering graduates, where you first gets a M.Sc.(Engg.) and then a Ph.D. and also a single degree integrated Ph.D. programme where they get only one degree. The admission for Ph.D. programme is through a screening process that involves an all-India written test followed by a Selection Interview. Check HBNI Admission 2019

Eligibility Criteria

Master of Science [M.Sc] (Engineering)

You should fulfil either of the following criteria:

  • You should be an employee recruited through BARC Training Schools located at various places across the country or the Technical Training Programme of IPR within five years preceding the date of application of admission. In addition, your performance in that training programmes must be above a threshold specified by the Board of Studies in Engineering Sciences.
  • You should have a B.E./ B.Tech./ M.Sc. or a PG Diploma or equivalent degree of a recognized university or institute with minimum 50% of marks.

Ph.D. (Chemical Sciences) , Ph.D. (Engineering) & Ph.D. (Health Systems)

For Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences: You should have a B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent from a recognized university or institute with minimum 50% of marks. If you have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree and have an aptitude for research in Engineering, you may also be considered for admission.

For Ph.D. in Science or Mathematics: You should have a M.Sc., M.V.Sc, M.Pharm. , MBBS, or equivalent from a recognized university or institute with minimum 50% of marks. If you have a B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent degree and have an aptitude for research in Science or Mathematics, you may also be considered for admission.

How to apply?

You can download the Application form online, for both programmes separately, from the Institute’s website, at the “Downloads” link under the “Student Corner” tab.

For both the courses, there are separate forms for “Employee student from CI”, “student” and “Employee student from DAE but not from CI”. You should download the form as per your background.

Fill the Application form with the required details.

You should attach the following list of Enclosures with the Application form:

  • Self-attested photo pasted (signature across the photo)
  • Self-attested copy for proof of Date-of-Birth
  • Self-attested copies of Mark Sheets & Degree Certificates
  • Self-attested copy of marksheet of completed course work as per suggestion of standing academic committee
  • Research Proposal (You should attach it separately with Part C of the form)

You should pay the Application Fee of Rs. 5000/- in the form of a Demand Draft in favour of Accounts Officer, HBNI payable at Mumbai.

Selection Process

Master of Science [M.Sc] (Engineering) , Ph.D. (Chemical Sciences) & Ph.D. (Engineering)

You will be selected on the basis of an All India written test conducted at the national level and approved by Academic Council. However, if you have qualified JEST, NET, NBHM, DBT, GATE, DST Inspire examinations, you are exempted from appearing for the written test.

If you are shortlisted, or have qualified for the above exams, it will be followed by a Selection Interview by an expert committee nominated by Director of CI (Constituent Institutions).

Reservation Criteria

The reservation criteria is as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India.
