Applications are invited by Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), Mumbai for admission to full-time (regular) Post-Graduate Degree Programs (MA, MSc, MPH, MHA) offered at Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad campuses and other locations for the academic session 2017.

TISS-NET is a yearly exam conducted for admissions to Masters in Social Work and related programs at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai and its campuses in Tuljiapur, Hyderabad, Guwahati and other locations.

Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad campuses have independent high quality faculty engaged in teaching, research, policy and outreach activities. The Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad campuses are networked with Mumbai campus to access library, online books and journals and classes. All campuses have unified campus placement policy and placement process.

TISS offers 57 Master's Degree programmes from its Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad campuses for the 2017-2019 batch. Candidates can apply for a maximum of three programmes across any of the two campuses indicating the order of preference. The merit list will be prepared based on the preferences given by the candidate in the application form.

National Entrance Test will take place at 39 different cities/towns across the country.  Pre Interview Test (PIT) and Personal Interview (PI)  for programmes offered at  Mumbai, Tuljapur, MHAT, Calicut, BANYAN, Chennai will be conducted at the Mumbai Campus . For programmes offered at Hyderabad and Guwahati, the PIT/PI will be conducted at the respective campuses. Candidates applying for programmes at more than one campus, will have to travel to these places for PIT/PI. Except for the eligible candidates from the SC/ST categories all others will bear the cost of travel, lodging and boarding for attending the NET, as well as PIT/PI.

Eligibility Criteria

MA , LLM & MHA

  • You should have a bachelor's degree (pass) with minimum of 3years duration or its equivalent (under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 or 10+2+2+1year bridge course pattern of study or any other pattern fulfilling the mandatory requirements of 15years formal education) from a recognized university are eligible to apply.
  • At the time of applying if you are studying in 3year degree programme then you should have passed in all the subjects for the 1st to 4th semesters and if you are studying in 4year degree programme then you should have passed in all the subjects for 1st to 6th semester.
  • If you have been declared as failed in the final year examination the you are not eligible to apply for any of the Master's Degree Programmes of the Institute, unless you pass your Bachelor's Degree examination on the day of applying for any of the programmes.
  • Eligibility, once determined on the basis of the information given by the candidates in the Application Form, shall be final for the purpose of test/interview/selection. However, in case it is found that the information furnished by a candidate is incorrect or misleading or ineligibility being detected before or after the test/interview/selection/admission, his/her candidature will be cancelled.
  • If a provisionally admitted student fails in the final year of his/her Bachelor's Degree Examination and even if he/she has re-evaluation at the university/college, he/she will not be allowed to continue the programme as the offer of provisional admission stands automatically cancelled on his/her failure in the final year examination.
  • Only those Candidates who will be able to complete all the requirements of their final year Bachelor's Degree examinations by Saturday, June 11, 2017 (tentative) are eligible to apply to all the programme.

NOTE: For MA in Applied Psychology with Specialisations in Counselling Psychology and Clinical Psychology, preference will be given to those candidates who have a graduate degree/BA in Psychology; BA/B.Sc. Home Science with specialisation in Child/Human Development; BA Social Work, BA General-with minimum three papers in Psychology

Till the time the candidates submit results of the final year degree examination, admission to any of the Master's Degree Programmes of the Institute will be provisional. The results of the final examination have to be submitted before September 30, 2017 (tentative). Those who fail to do so the provisional admission stands cancelled.


How to apply?

Online procedure:

STEP 1: Visit the application page by clicking here.

STEP 2: Fill in the boxes with the required details to be taken to ‘application home page.’ Fill in your basic details, academic details and have to mention the programmes they wish to apply for in the order of preference.

STEP 3: Choose to pay the fee online (credit/debit card or net banking) OR offline (SBI challan).

STEP 4: Scan and upload photograph, signature, mark sheet of last exam passed and other necessary certificates.               

Payment of application fees

Application fee: General candidates – Rs.1030/-

 SC/ST candidates (parental income less than 2.75 lakhs) and OBC candidates (parental income less than 1 lakh) – Rs.250/-

You can choose between two modes of payment namely Cash and Payment gateway.

Payment Gateway (online payment)

Payment gateway pertains to payment made through credit/debit card or online transactions.

Cash (Offline payment)

  • If you choose to pay through cash then deposit the cash amount mentioned on the challan in any branch of State Bank of India.
  • The bank will return two copies of the challan copy (Student Copy and TISS Copy) with the bank’s seal, signature and journal number on it.
  • Candidates have to then scan the 'TISS Copy' of the challan, login back to the online application system and upload it.
  • Please note that in case of payment by cash deposit in an SBI branch, the SBI will charge Rs.50/- as their processing fee, which has to be paid separately, and is not a part of the application fees.

NOTE: If you are eligible for the concessional fee of Rs.250/- then you would have to upload the caste and income certificate. 

Photograph for Admit Card

Photograph with the following specifications needs to be uploaded.

  1. The photograph should be a recent colour photograph taken against a plain background.
  2. The photograph should show only your face and shoulders.
  3. The photograph should not have any other object or person in part or full.
  4. The photograph should be a good resolution; clear photograph in png, jpeg format and its size should not exceed 2MB.

Offline procedure:

Candidates from remote places where no Internet and Telecommunication facilities are available can get a printed copy of the application form from the Institute. Please send request for printed form by Speed Post with application fees to

Selection Process

MA , LLM & MHA

The selection of candidates for different programmes happens in two stages and has three components of assessment. All candidates appear for the National entrance test (TISSNET). Based on the performance in the TISSNET examination, only short listed candidates are called for the Pre Interview Test and Personal Interview.(PIT/PI)

TISS NET 2017 WILL NOT HAVE NEGATIVE MARKING FOR ANY PROGRAMME.

Merit List preparation:

  1. The weightage for NET, PIT and PI is as follows for the for the preparation of final merit lists for General as well as for Reserved Category candidates. NET – 40% ; PIT – 30% ; PI – 30%.
  2. The merit list will be prepared on the basis of merit and the preferences indicated by the candidates at the time of filling up the online application form (Kindly Indicate your preferences carefully as it has implications for the merit list) 
  3. In case of a tie between two candidates, their PI marks will be compared and the one with more marks in PI will be considered, in case there is a tie in PI marks too their PIT marks will be compared and the one with more marks in PIT will be considered, in case there is a tie in PIT marks too then the Entrance test marks will be compared and the one with more marks in entrance test will be considered, in case there is a tie in Entrance marks too then the candidate higher in age will be given the seat.

Based on the merit list for each programme, the list of selected candidates will be put up on the website. Each candidate will also receive his/her score card indicating the marks for each component of the examination process.

TISS-NET Exam Pattern

The objective test will have questions related to General Knowledge; Analytical Ability, Logical Reasoning; and English Proficiency.

TISS - NET 2017 will not have negative marking for any programme including HRM. Candidates who have applied for a single programme or multiple programmes will be attempting a single question paper with 100 questions for a duration of 100 minutes, this includes candidates who have chosen HRM in combination with other programme/ programmes.

KINDLY NOTE:

This year General Awareness will consist of 40 marks, English Proficiency 30 marks, Maths and Logical Reasoning - 30 marks.


Reservation Criteria

Reservation of seats is as per Govt. of India requirements.

  1. 15% for Scheduled Castes
  2. 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes
  3. 27% for Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer)
  4. 1% for Kashmiri Migrants
  5. 5% for Arm Forces (Supernumerary Quota, respectively)
  6. The 3% for Persons with Disability as per Disability Act (which is 1% each reserved for persons with:
  • Low Vision/Blindness
  • Hearing Impairment, and
  • Learning Disability/Cerebral Palsy)

The TISS Guwahati Campus has been established with support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDONER), Govt. of India

The campus is expected to benefit students from the eight States in the region. 66% of the seats will be proportionately distributed amongst the eight North-eastern States (seats allocated to each of the states will follow the reservation norms of that State); and 34% of the seats for students from rest of India (Government of India reservation norms applied to these seats).
