IIT BHU offers a full time Ph.D program is offered by all academic departments and schools of the Institute. All Ph.D. Programmes are with course work of specified credits. The Institute provides Phd programs in four different categories along with 19 different specialisations. Number of seats for Ph.D. admission will be decided by the concerned Department/School.

The maximum course duration of Ph.D program provided by the institute is 3 years.

Admission announcements for these doctorate programs are issued twice in a year, that is, October/November and March/April.Admissions to the Ph.D. programs are entrance based, i.e., CSIR NET or UGC NET JRF.

IIT BHU Ph.D Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for admissions to the four different categories of Ph.D course is as follows:

1- Ph.D in Engineering:

  • Master's degree in engineering in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/ area must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level. Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.
  • Master's degree in science as an allied discipline/area (where science is an allied discipline/area), must satisfy each of the following criteria:

(i) A minimum of 65% marks or 6.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level,

(ii) A minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level.

2- Ph.D in Sciences:

  • Applicants with a master's degree in science in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level.
  • Applicants with four year bachelor’s degree in Science in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level. 
  • Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.

3- Ph.D in Pharmacy:

  • Applicants with a master's degree in pharmacy or in an allied discipline/area must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level.
  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level. Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.

4- Ph.D in Humanistic Studies:

  • Applicants with a Master's degree in a relevant subject or allied subjects with a minimum CPI of 6.00 on a 10.0 point scale (or 60% marks) in the qualifying degree.
  • Applicants with a Master's degree in Science or allied subjects with a minimum CPI of 6.00 on a 10.0 point scale (or 60% marks) in the qualifying degree.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Sciences (4-Year program) with a minimum CPI of 7.50 on a 10.0 point scale (or 75% marks) in the bachelor degree. Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.

Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Programmes

1- Ph.D. in Systems Engineering:

  • Applicants with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in any branch of Engineering must have a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level.
  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in any branch of engineering must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level. Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.

2- Ph.D. in Industrial Management:

  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in any branch of engineering and a master's degree in any branch of engineering/ management must have a minimum of 60% or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level.
  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in any branch of engineering must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level. Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.

3- Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering/ Biomedical Engineering/ Materials Science and Technology:

  • Applicants with a master's degree in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline must have a minimum of 60% or 6.0 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the master’s degree level.
  • Applicants with a bachelor's degree in the discipline concerned or in an allied discipline must have a minimum of 75% marks or 7.5 CPI (on a 10.0 point scale) at the bachelor’s degree level.
  • Applicant with more than two years of professional experience, the minimum requirement shall be 70% marks or 7.0 CPI (on a 10 point scale) at bachelor degree provided the degree is from an Institution funded by the Central Government.

IIT BHU Ph.D Selection Process

The selection process for admissions to Ph.D courses is as follows:

  • Admission will be based on the interview of the candidates shortlisted by the Department/School concerned.
  • The following category of applicants shall be exempted from appearing in the written test:

1-Full Time External Registration Category

2-Sponsored Registration Category

3-Part-time Registration Category

4-Candidates having National Level Scholarships

  • Upon approval of the Chairman, Senate, the Head of the Department/Coordinator of the School concerned will issue admission letters to the candidates who will be required to accept the offer of admission by depositing the prescribed fee before a specified date.
  • In case a candidate does not accept the offer by paying the prescribed fee by the specified date, the offer of admission will stand withdrawn, and the admission will be offered to the candidates on the waiting list, if any, in order of merit.
  • Number of seats for Ph.D. admission will be decided by the concerned Department/School.

Applicants must attach the following documents along with their applications:

  • Class 10th Marksheet and Passing Certificate.
  • Class 12th Marksheet and passing Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s Marksheets and Degree Certificate.
  • Master’s Marksheets and Degree Certificate.
  • Scorecard of Entrance Exam taken.

IIT BHU Ph.D Application Process

Below mentioned are the guidelines for filling up the online application form successfully:

Step 1- Register into the admission portal

  • Applicants must register into the admission portal in order to submit the application online.
  • Click on the “Register” link to open the registration page. Enter your valid email address and create a password. All correspondences related to your application will be sent to the provided email ID only.
  • After you have successfully completed the registration, the login credentials (username and password) will be mailed to your Email ID.

Step 2- Fill in Personal Details and Upload your photograph and signature

  • Fill in your personal details asked correctly such as full name, Father’s name, Mother’s Name and Date of birth as per your High School Certificate etc.
  • After providing the necessary information, upload your color photograph and signature by clicking the appropriate “Browse” button.

Step 3- Pay Online the Application Processing Fee

  • The application processing fee (INR 500 for GEN/OBC/EWS candidates and INR 250 for SC/ST/Physically Disabled candidates) should be paid online only and is Non-Refundable.

IIT BHU Ph.D Reservation Details

The reservation criteria set by the Institute is as follows:

  • For SC/ST/OBC candidates, in each discipline, 15% seats are reserved for SC, 7.5% seats for ST and 27% seats for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates.
  • SC/ST/OBC candidates must also satisfy the eligibility requirements for admission. However, while considering their cases, only suitability for the program is ensured and the SC/ST/OBC candidates are not compared with those belonging to other categories.
  • Further, a relaxation of 5% marks or 0.5 CPI (on a 10 point scale) shall be admissible on the marks obtained in qualifying degree for SC and ST candidates in the admission.

In two years, if the fellow is promoted as SRF, the basic fellowship is increased to 28000 INR pm.
