National Law School (NLSIU) Bangalore M.Phil, Ph.D and LL.D Admissions 2020: Courses, Placement, Fees

National Law School of INDIA University, Bangalore provides research degrees to take admissions through UGC NET/JFR as well as through their own admission test. NLSIU provides Ph.D., M.Phil. and LL.D research programmes which requires a minimum of 3 years and maximum of 5 years. Candidates need to appear for an oral presentation to the panel of experts constituted by the University for selecting candidates.

Completed applications for different research programmes must reach NLSIU office within the stipulated time. Presentation for the research proposal is done in the month of September and classes begin in October. University provides financial assistance to deserving candidates for which they have different scholarship programmes.  Check NLSIU Admission

How To Apply

Candidate can download the application form available at the official university website. Upon filling the application form with all the relevant details, candidates must send it along with a research proposal of 10 to 12 pages and required fee thorugh demand draft (DD). 

DD of Rs. 3000/- should be drawn in favour of Registrar, NLSIU and payable at Bangalore. Completed applications must reach the following address within the stipulated time:

Structure of proposal:

  • Title
  • Background of the subject
  • Research questions with hypothesis
  • Research design

NOTE: Proposal for Ph.D. inter-disciplinary should contain topics on legal aspects, review and reform.


Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)


Candidate needs to complete the research process in between 3 to 5 years.

Ph.D. is available in the following 2 disciplines:

  • Ph.D. degree (law)

Eligibility: Those candidates who have completed their L.L.M in regular mode with a minimum of 55% or ‘B+’ grade from a recognized university are eligible for Ph.D. in Law.

  • Ph.D. degree (Inter-disciplinary)

Eligibility: Candidates having master degree in any discipline and a bachelor degree in Law from a recognized university are eligible for Ph.D. inter-disciplinary programme.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)


A candidate needs to complete the research process in minimum 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.

Eligibility: A candidate having LL.M. degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 55% or B+ grade can apply for M.Phil.

Admission Process

  • Entrance Test for Ph.D. on per with UGC NET/JRF will be conducted by the university. Candidates scoring minimum 50% aggregate of marks in the test will be permitted to appear for the next round of presentation in front of the expert panel

NOTE: A candidate who has qualified UGC NET/JRF, SLET and foreign nationals are exempted from the admission test.

  • Candidate will be selected by the university on the basis of recommendation by Post graduate council created by the Vice Chancellor of University based upon test result and presentation.

NOTE: If a student fails to complete the research process within 5 years then his registration will be cancelled.



  • Merit Scholarship: The student who scores 6.00 CGPA out of 7.00 in previous year exams will be benefited from this scholarship.
  • Merit cum means Scholarship: Those students who are financially weak will get this scholarship subjected to the submission of valid documents of family income proof.
  • Academic assistance scheme: Student who is financially unstable can get financial assistance from the facility members of the University for Not more than 30 hours a month for which Rs 20 will be allotted per hour.
  • Central government Scholarship:  The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment provides financial aid to 10 SC students throughout their study. Ministry of Tribal Affairs provides scholarship to 5 ST students for their first year of the course. The selection for the scholarship is made on the basis of rank in the entrance test and their family income

Annual fee: INR 25,000

Final presentation fee: INR 50,000

Examination fee: INR 20,000

Re-submission of thesis: INR 20,000

For M.Phil. programme

Registration Fee: INR 25,000

Examination Fee: INR 15,000

Continuation fee for 2 years (after 1st year): INR 15,000
