CUSAT M.Tech. Admission 2019: Admit Card, Application Form, Entrance Exam

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) offers 18 full-time & 4 part-time M.Tech programmes, 9 M.Phil. programmes and it also offer Ph.D. programme. Generally for all courses, the application starts from January month of every year. This year, the application for admission to Ph.D./M.Phil., M.Tech./M.A. Translation-German & Russian programme has been started from February 07, 2019 (tentative) and it will be closed on February 28, 2019 (tentative).

Applicants for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes will be required to appear for the Departmental Admission Test(DAT) conducted in the respective Department / School of CUSAT on dates to be announced later.

Admission to M.Tech is based on GATE 2019 score except M.Tech Marine Engineering and M.Tech in Marine Bio-Technology. But if sufficient numbers of applicants not available then other candidates without GATE score can appear DAT exam for admission to M.Tech.

In CUSAT, all programmes of CUSAT except the 3 year evening LLB programme are approved for fee concessions for SC/ST candidates and other Eligible Communities. 50% tuition fee concession will be granted for PWD candidates. Hostel accommodation for around 700 female and 600 male students is available for all UG, PG and Research students. Note: Part time M.Tech. programmes are offered  in alternate years and the same are not offered in 2019.

Duration: M.Tech (Full-time): 2 Year or 4 Semester & M.Tech (Part-time): 3 Year or 6 Semester

Eligibility Criteria for All M.Tech Programme except Marine Engineering and Marine Bio-Technology

You must have a B.E/B.Tech or equivalent degree or AM IE in any discipline or AM II with 60% marks from any recognized University or institution with valid GATE score. For M.Tech Part-time programmes, GATE score is not required.

The Candidates with valid GATE score are eligible for 5% relaxation in the qualifying examination marks for M.Tech Programmes. Candidates belonging to Kerala Scheduled Cast (KSC) and Kerala Scheduled Tribe (KST) communities are eligible for applying, if they have minimum pass marks in the qualifying examination.

Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Marine Engineering)

You must have a B.Tech./B.E/B.S Degree  in Marine Engineering  OR B.Tech./ B.Sc. (Engg)  Degree  in Mechanical  Engineering  or B.Tech. Degree  in Naval  Architecture & Ship  Building  with a minimum  of 60% marks or an examination  of any  other University /Institution with 60% marks.

Preference will be given to  those who  have  passed  M.E.O  class IV examination or minimum of 2  years professional experience in ship building /ship repair  yard  /ship  design office/Indian Navy.

Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Marine Biotechnology)

You must have a B.Tech/BE in relevant fields or B.Pharma/M.Sc. in relevant fields with 60% marks or equivalent CGPA from any  recognized  Indian or foreign University.

M.Phil/Ph.D in Science , M.Phil/Ph.D in Management & M.Phil/Ph.D in Arts

Eligibility Criteria for M.Phil programmes:

You must have Master’s Degree in relevant fields with 55% marks or equivalent CGPA points from any recognized University. A relaxation of 5% of marks shall be given to the SC/ST candidates in the qualifying examination.

The Candidates who have passed the Master's degree examination in the Distance/Continuing Education mode are eligible for admission only if their degree is awarded by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.

Note: 50% Seats will be reserved for University or College teachers.

Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D. programmes:

You must have a Master’s Degree from a recognized University with 55% marks in the qualifying examination, or a CGPA of 6.0 in the 10 point scale or an equivalent grade in similar scales. A candidate belonging to SC/ST community is eligible for concession upto 10% marks for admission provided that he/she has a pass in the qualifying examination.

The following candidates are exempted from DAT:

  • Candidates who possess National/Kerala State research fellowship s with valid score.
  • Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET Lectureship examination or GATE/ICAR/KSCSTE /CSIR/NBHM /ICSS/M.Phil.
  • Candidates who have been awarded Fellowship s by the Govt. of India or the Government of Kerala.
  • Foreign students who have been sponsored under a scholarship scheme by the Government of India

Note: DAT exempted candidates may be admitted at any time during the academic year on submission of application. They will be interviewed by the Research Committee or its sub-committee and marks will be awarded for interview.

How to apply?

ME/M.Tech , M.Phil/Ph.D in Engineering & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

You can submit application form only offline mode for M.Phil/Ph.D./M.A. Translation-German & Russian programme. The registration window has been opened from February 07, 2019 (tentative). Visit related departments/schools to collect application form or obtain by post . The last date for application is February 28, 2019 (tentative).

Application Fee:

  • INR 1000/- For General & OBC Candidates
  • INR 500/- For SC/ST Candidates
  • INR 6000/- For NRI Candidates

Note: An additional  fee of Rs. 10,000/- is payable by  candidates opting Dubai as Test Centre.

You can apply for M.Phil/Ph.D./M.A. Translation-German & Russian programme only offline mode. You can obtain the printed application from the concerned Departments either directly or through post by paying the required application fee through Demand Draft, drawn in favour of “Registrar, CUSAT” payable at Ernakulam.

Submit Application Form: There are two mode to submit application form.

  • By Person: You can submit filled application form in related departments.
  • By Post: You can send filled application form to related departments by post before last date of form submission.

Selection Procedure


Admission Procedure for all M.Tech programme except Marine Engineering and Marine Bio-Technology :

For admission to full time  M. Tech programmes  except  for M. Tech Marine Engineering  and M.Tech Marine Bio-Technology a valid GATE Score in the relevant subject  is compulsory. Applicants will be ranked  on the basis of their GATE Score. Only  in the absence  of sufficient numbers  of GATE qualified candidates, candidates  without GATE Score  will be considered for admission  on the basis of DAT Score.

For all Part Time M.Tech Programmes, the rank  lists will  be prepared on the basis of the score obtained  in respective DAT.

Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Marine Engineering)

GATE score is not considered. The admission will be based on the Rank list prepared by giving due weightage to qualifying degree marks (50%), Admission Test conducted by the Department (40%), and number of years experience after obtaining the degree (weightage is at the rate of 1% per year of experience subject to a maximum of 10%). In the case of Marine Engineers possessing M.E.O Class II Certificate of competency 5% weightage and for those possessing M.E.O. Class I Certificate 10% weightage.

Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Marine Biotechnology)

For  admission to M.Tech  in Marine Bio-Technology, GATE  score  is not considered.  Selection of candidates is done by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on behalf of  Department of  Bio-technology, Government of  India  through a National Test along with all such examinations conducted by  the JNU.  For  details visit JNU website:

For M.Phil Programme:

Admission to M.Phil. programme, the rank list shall be pepared on the basis of the Marks obtained Qualifying Examination, DAT Score and score for interview.  The weightage for written test and interview for ranking will be as follows.

For Ph.D. Programme:

You should qualify Departmental Admission Test (DAT) for admission to Ph.D. Programme in Departments/Schools at CUSAT. The DAT exam shall have two parts

  • Written Test
  • interview

You should have scored at least 50% marks in the written examination to be eligible to be ranked for admission. For Ph.D Programmes Candidates belonging to SC/ST communities are entitled to a concession of 5% marks in the written examination of the DAT.

The weightage for written test and interview for ranking will be as follows.

Special Reservation

Physically Challenged: 3% seats are  reserved for physically  challenged  candidates with at least 40% disability for all  B.Tech courses, except B.Tech Marine Engineering,  Mechanical  Engineering,  Naval  Architecture & Ship  Building,  Instrumentation, Polymer Science  & Engineering and Safety & Fire Engineering. One seat  each for all other academic programmes except  M.Sc. (Industrial Fisheries)  is reserved for physically  challenged candidates.

Blind: Reservation for Blind candidates is applicable only for MA (Hindi) and LLM programmes.
