Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University M.Ed. Admissions 2018

Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University (TNTEU) is a state university which specializes in teachers' education. It is a unique university of this kind, for it is the first and only one University in India, which is solely established for promoting excellence in teachers education. It has more than 700 affiliated colleges which consist of Government/ Government-Aided/ Self-Financing Colleges of Education.

The university offers the following 4 programmes in most of its affiliated colleges:

  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
  • Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

For admission to M.Ed. / Ph.D. / M.Phil. programme, student must possess the qualifying degree in the relevant stream. Interested candidates can apply by submitting duly filled-in applications, along with necessary enclosures and processing fee, before the last specified date.

Final selection of the candidate for M.Ed. and M.Phil. Programme will be done on the basis of his/her performance in the qualifying degree examination. For Ph.D. admissions, an entrance test will be conducted by the concerned department and candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of the marks scored.

Eligibility Criteria

The following section contains information regarding eligibility criteria for different courses offered by TNTEU.


Candidate should have passed Bachelor’s Degree Examination in Education of this University or some other University recognized as equivalent thereto, with at least 50% marks in theory and practical separately. 


Ph.D. (Education)

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) – Full-Time

  • Candidate should have obtained Master Degree with 50% marks or Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree with 55% marks of this University or any other University recognized as equivalent thereto
  • Candidate who have completed M.A. Education with 55% prior to January 1, 1991, from this university or any other University approved by Syndicate of Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University are also eligible to apply for the course

Note: A relaxation of 5% in the minimum required aggregate is provided for candidates belonging to SC/ST/Physically Challenged category

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) – Part-Time

Candidates should have passed M.Ed. degree course after B.Ed. and with the general Graduate/Post graduate qualification under 10+2+3+2 / 11+1+3+2.  

For Internal candidates:  

Candidate seeking admission to Ph.D. (Part-time) programme should possess two years of teaching experience in the affiliated Colleges of Education of TNTEU or any other University as recognized by TNTEU.

  • Duration of the programme for candidates with M.Phil. degree – 2 years
  • Duration of the programme for candidates without M.Phil. degree – 3 years

For External candidates:

Candidates possessing requisite qualifications from any other University recognized by the Tamil Nadu Teacher’s Education University Syndicate as equivalent thereto, and employed in National/State level institutions, Universities, Research and Development (R&D) Centers are eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme on a Part-time basis as external candidates.


M.Phil. (Education)

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) – Full-Time (1 year)

The programme is offered in the following departments:

  • Pedagogical Science
  • Value Education
  • Educational Psychology
  • Educational Technology
  • Curriculum Planning and Evaluation
  • Educational Planning and Administration


  • Candidates should have qualified for M.Ed. degree of this university or any university recognized by the Syndicate as equivalent thereto prior to January 1, 1991.
  • Candidates shall be required to have obtained a minimum of 55 % of marks in their Post-Graduate Degree in Education. A relaxation of 5% marks is provided for candidates belonging to SC/ST category.  

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) – Part-Time (2 years)


Teacher candidates working in affiliated colleges or in Departments of the University or in Polytechnic approved by the Department of Technical Education or in approved Higher Secondary Schools and High Schools under State Board or Central Board or Education Instructors of Indian Armed Force who possess the M.Ed. degree with at least 55% marks are eligible for admission to Part-time M.Phil. Programme.


How to Apply

M.Ed & M.Phil/Ph.D in Education

Candidates seeking admission to M.Ed. / Ph.D./ M.Phil. programme can download the prescribed application form available at the university website and submit it upon completion to the University office along with the processing fee.

Application forms can also be obtained from the University office in person on payment of prescribed fee by means of Demand Draft (DD). DD should be drawn in favour of “The Registrar, Tamilnadu Teachers Education University,” payable at Chennai 600 005.

In case of Ph.D admissions, duly filled-in applications should be countersigned by the principal and proposed guide where the candidate has proposed to do the Ph.D. Research work.

Application Fee:

For Ph.D. appplication form

  • For OC/BC/MBC candidates: Rs.750/- 
  • For SC/ST candidates: Rs.350/-

For M.Phil. application form

  • For OC/BC/MBC candidates: Rs.500/- 
  • For SC/ST candidates: Rs.250/-

Note: SC/ST candidates should also produce copy to the Community Certificate to avail the concession in the application fee.

Admission Process

The following section contains information regarding selection process for different courses offered by the university.


Selection of candidates for admission to M.Ed. degree programme shall be based on their performance in the qualifying degree examination.

Ph.D. (Education)

  • Admissions to the Ph.D. programme will be made purely on the basis of entrance test of 50 marks (Written - 40, Oral - 10) which will be conducted by the respective department / college / Institution. The candidate should secure at least 25 marks out of 50 in the entrance test to become eligible for admission. 
  • The candidate with fellowship from the UGC, CSIR etc. / Project Fellow appointed in the major research project from funding agency / and teachers working in affiliated colleges shall be exempted from appearing for entrance test. 

M.Phil. (Education)

Selection of candidates for admission to M.Phil. programme shall be based on their performance in the qualifying degree examination.

Reservation Criteria

For candidates belonging to SC, ST, MBC / DNC, BC, and other special categories, reservation of seats and other concessions are granted in accordance with the statutory provisions of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
