It was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand by the philanthropist and industrialist Late Shri. B. M. Birla. Eligibility: Candidates should fulfil any of the following conditions to be eligible to apply for admission in the departments as per their Specialization:

  • Candidates possessing M.Tech. / M.E. / M.Sc. (Engineering) / M.Arch. / M.Pharm / M.Sc. / MCA / MBA or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University / Institute with minimum 60% marks or 6.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination
  • Candidates possessing B.Tech. / B.E./ B.Sc. (Engineering)/ B.Pharm / B.Arch. or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University/ Institute with minimum 70% marks or 7.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination and a valid GATE score with a minimum of 80 percentile.
  • Candidates possessing B.Tech. / B.E./ B.Sc. (Engineering)/ B.Pharm / B.Arch. or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University/ Institute with minimum 70% marks or 7.0 CGPA on a ten point scale in the qualifying examination and employed in R&D organisations and having ten years’ experience with good research credentials.

Note: There shall be a relaxation of 5% marks in case of SC/ST candidates. In case of the candidates with other grade point scale, the decision of the equivalence committee of the institute shall be final.

How To Apply

M.Phil/Ph.D in Engineering , M.Phil/Ph.D in Management & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

The Application Forms are to be filled online at the University website and submitted within the stipulated time. You must use one application form to apply for Ph.D. Programme in only one Department, and use separate application forms to apply for two or more Departments. You can apply to a maximum of three departments only.

Step 1: You must visit the University website and click on “Click Here to Apply Online”. A login page will open where you will see 2 options, to register or to login in case you have already registered.

Step 2: You should register for the Application Form by filling in the required personal details and the programme you’re applying for. You must use the given username and password for login.

Step 3: You must fill in the educational details and professional work experience details.

Step 4: You should then upload your recent colour passport size photograph which should not exceed 5kb in size.

Step 5: You can now either save your Application for future changes or if you have completed the Application, click on “Generate Application Number”.

Step 6: After generation of ‘Application Number’, you must click on the link State Bank Collect for payment towards application fee of Rs. 2500 or general and OBC category and Rs. 1500 for SC/ST category, either through net banking, or debit or credit card.

Step 7: You must then submit your Application Form and take a print out of the Application Form.

Step 8: You should attach the following enclosures with the Form (You must write your Name and “B.Pharm” on the back of each of the photocopies):

  • Class 10th certificate
  • Class 10th and Class 12th marksheet
  • Certificate and mark-sheets of Graduation
  • Certificate and mark-sheets of Post-Graduation
  • College Leaving Certificate
  • Migration Certificate
  • CSIR-NET / BRNS/ NBHM / other test admit card and Score card (if applicable)
  • Caste certificate / special category certificate (if applicable) which should be in proper format and signed by appropriate authority of rank not less than SDO
  • NOC, Experience Certificate and Facilities available to carry out the research work at their place of working (if applicable) for candidates employed in R&D organizations
  • Photo identification
  • One recent colour photograph

Step 9: You should then send the printed copy of the Application Form along with the required enclosures and a copy of the Payment Receipt in an A4 size envelope with “Application for Ph.D. Admission (MO)” written on top of the envelope, to the following address:

Admission Process

M.Phil/Ph.D in Architecture , M.Phil/Ph.D in Engineering & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

The selection to the Ph.D. Programme will be based on performance in a Written Test, Previous academic record and an Interview.

The Ph.D. Entrance Test would consist of 2 parts:

  1. General Aptitude Test common to all applicants shall comprise of 50 questions from Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning, and English, both having 25 each, to be answered in 60 minutes. The questions will be both subjective and objective carrying a total of 100 marks. There shall be negative marking with 0.5 marks being deducted for every wrong answer.
  2. Subject Specific Tests to examine basic fundamental knowledge in the subject also for one and a half hour

The syllabi of the General Aptitude Test and the Subject Specific Tests for each Department can be seen on the Department web pages on the Institute website.

Only such candidates, who obtain the minimum required marks in Aptitude Test, Subject Specific Test and the indicated total percentage of marks, will be considered for final preparation of result as given below:

Exemptions: You will be exempted from writing the Entrance Test if you have qualified UGC-JRF, CSIR-NET, or any other national level test for pursuing Ph.D.


The reservation criteria will be as per the norms prescribed by the state government of Jharkhand.


Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes shall be eligible only if they fulfil any of the following condition:

  • If they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment
  • If the programmes are recognized by the DEC-UGC-AICTE or MHRD
  • If they have passed the qualifying examination at the time of applying, with minimum requisite marks as given in eligibility criteria.

They must enclose photocopies of work experience certificate and pass certificate and mark-sheets of qualifying examination with their application.
