IIM Bangalore (IIMB) is ranked among the top institutes in management education category in India. This institute strives to equip the students with respect to today’s scenario to face upcoming challenges in tomorrow. IIMB awards students a two year, full time residential Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP)equivalent to MBA offered by other universities.
A valid Common Admission Test (CAT ) score is required to generalize the minimum marks expected from a candidate in respective fields (as represented by minimum marks desired in different sections). After calculating the marks of different sections, a composite score has been framed. This score affects the performance of students at subsequent admission stages. In short, CAT score is an important parameter towards selection in IIM’s, as it varies every year. Check IIMB Admission 2019
There are two ways for admissions to the PGP: one for Indian students and the other is for overseas candidates. The admission proceedings and application processes for both are different.
Post Graduate Program (PGP): This program has been offered to provide expertise in both domestic & international public policy. The teaching methodology includes exchange of ideas from both government & private sector in one classroom. It helps the students to develop their leadership, decision making as well as communication skills.

The most important eligibility criterion for CAT is academic qualification. It is the minimum qualification or degree a candidate must possess in order to apply for CAT . The academic qualification required to appear for CAT is listed below:
Note 1: A recognized university is one which is constituted by an act of the Central or State Legislature. It also includes any university or institute which is established by an act of Parliament or is declared as Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act of 1956.
Note 2: In case of Universities which award grades or CGPA, but do not have a procedure for conversion of grades to percentage, the equivalent percentage will be calculated by the given process:
(Candidate’s CGPA/Maximum CGPA) X 100 = Equivalent Percentage
Students seeking admission to MBA programmes at IIMB should apply through official CAT website. The registration fee is INR 1700/- (For General and NC-OBC candidates) and INR 850/- (For SC/ST/ OBC candidates).
For admission to IIM Bangalore, candidates will have to select the name of program offered at the institutes as per their preference. Along with the preference for program, candidates also have to enter their choice of city for interview.
Admission in PGP will be offered to both international & domestic candidates. IIMB follows the detailed & well-defined admission process. Admission panel will judge the aspirants on the basis of certain parameters as discussed below:
IIMB picks up those students, who performed well & consistent in their high school & graduation level. Next criteria are performance of the students (sufficient aptitude requirement) in CAT .
IIMB has developed an internal two phase admission process to select the meritorious students for its PGP programme. First phase is applicable to those students who have qualified in CAT to determine the number of students to be called for the personal interview round.
During the PI process students have to write a short note on a topic given by IIMB authorities. The topic will be chosen from current political, economic & business affairs. Apart from sports, areas of creative thinking will also be covered. The time allotted for writing the short note will be around 30 minutes.
During PI, students’ academic skills, work quality & experience will be evaluated. The short note will be evaluated separately. Marks of interview & written test will be used to identify the collective marks, which will act as a pre-selection parameter for the second phase of selection.
Note: Interviews for International students will be conducted through video conferencing.
CAT score calculation, first phase:
First phase of selection process covers written test & pre interview proceedings. All standardization will be performed with respect to students belonging to first phase only. In short we can say that I phase will cover CAT score, Marks in 10th& 12th standard, marks in bachelor degree, Gender diversity, work experience & references.
|Minimum marks requirements|
|Category||QA||DI & LR||Verbal ability & reading comprehension||Total|
For marks listed above, student’s percentage marks in 10th& 12th board are initially divided by 90th percentile obtained in that board. 90th percentile will be calculated by considering the score of (past two years) of CAT applicants in that board.
For students shortlisted with respect to the marks stated in the above table, final marks will be used for bachelor or professional degree (if any). Candidates with Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretary certifications are eligible to be considered under professional courses.
For all the candidates shortlisted according to the above score, work experience will be calculated as:
=5x/36 where 0
=5 if x>=36, where x is the number of the months of work experience. It means work experience will be maximum of 36 months or greater than that. The work experience score (maximum 5) will be multiplied with work quality as decided by interviewer which is given as (0.25-0.5-1-1.5-2). Work experience score & professional course score will be calculated on the scale of 10.
Apart from work experience other selection components will be fixed as:
20 points in CAT will be derived through the marks obtained in the sections asked in CAT exam (QA-5 points/DI & LR-8 points& VRC-7 points). After a proper normalization process, students will be called for II phase of selection.
Note: Gender diversity component will be considered for Pre-PI stage (I phase), not applicable for II phase.
Second Phase of Selection:
Here performance of aspirants in the written test will be evaluated in terms of content used & style. All candidates will be required to provide three confidential reference letters from their employers or faculty and this will also be used in the personal interview evaluation. For Personal Interview – the average of the scores given by the interviewers will be considered, while for the note content and note style, the scores given by an independent evaluator will be considered.
Weightage for note content=7.5
Weightage for Note Style=7.5
After proper standardization, pre PI score will be added to the above scores (excluding gender diversity score) to calculate the final aggregate score.
Note: In pre PI stage those students who have performed well in academics & also have a good work experience. It is very easy to find out those aspirants for the PI who have good academic record and work experience but who, while doing well enough in the CAT to be in the first cutoff, may have slightly missed the good score that would have been required if CAT was the only basis for the PI shortlist. Such candidates can easily replace those competitors who have only a high CAT score but not well enough academic record and work experience.
International students (those who have valid passport or travel document) can apply directly for PGP program. If foreign students are not in the position to take CAT then they are required to appear in the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT ). After declaration of result, qualified students are required to report in IIMB with an official report card. Desired GMAT code for IIMB is Q9H—KK-49. Admission requirements for the same are given below:
Note: In order to qualify as a resident abroad for the purpose of applying as an International Candidate to PGP, a candidate should have been (expected to be) resident outside India for a period of 18 months, and be outside India during the CAT examination window.
