Kerala University M.Phil and Ph.D. Admission 2017

University of Kerala is one of the first 16 universities to come into existence in India. The University currently has 16 faculties and 41 departments of teaching and research. The University has also a number of study centres in specialized areas such as Nano-technology, Kerala Studies, Bioinformatics, Women’s Studies, Learning Difficulties, Sree Narayana Studies, Gandhian Studies etc.

University of Kerala offers M.Phil.  And Ph.D. in a wide range of disciplines. The basic eligibility criteria for admission to M.Phil. and PhD program is a Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline. 

The University takes admission to M.Phil. program once a year while admission process for PhD program is conducted twice a year. The admissions are made through an entrance test conducted by the university. Admission to PhD programs are also made with a few exceptions and exemptions. You can apply online through Kerala University’s official website before the last date. The University is soon to begin the PhD admission process for the January 2017 session.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Programs

  • One must have obtained a master’s degree in the related discipline with at least 55% Marks.
  • Candidates who have appeared for Master’s Degree Examination and whose result is still awaited may also apply.
  • Candidates who have already qualified in the National Eligibility Testfor Junior Research Fellowship (NET-JRF) or lectureship of the UGC/CSIR or ICAR/GATE or ICMR JRF or the scholars who have been selected for fellowshipby the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment or the state level eligibility test conducted by Kerala Government.
  • Candidates with following qualifications are exempted from the entrance test for Ph.D. admissions: DBT-JRF, DST-INSPIRE, GPAT, Candidates/scholars with 7 years of experience and at least 2 research papers, candidates with DM/M.Ch. Degree, candidates working with Central/state government in the related areas of research.

Application Procedure for M.Phil

The application form for M.Phil. courses can be accessed online through the Admission portal on Kerala University Official Website. A candidate will need to provide certain essential details during form filling such as: Name as on official documents, valid email id, contact details, details of qualifying degree examination etc. After registration a candidate will need to submit application fee. The application fee details are given below:

The application fee can be submitted to Account number 67153233669 in any branch of State Bank of Travancore, through a challan generated during Registration process. After submitting the fee, the candidate must fill the payment details in their respective application forms. Candidates, who do not have a State Bank of Travancore branch nearby, can submit the application fee through RTGS transfer. The details for the same are given below:

Application Procedure for Ph.D. Programme:

Application forms will be available on the official website of Kerala University, After online application, a candidate can download the filled in application form. Here are the steps to apply online:

  1. Go to Kerala University’s Research Website.
  2. On the right side, click on ‘Online Registration”.
  3. The candidate should provide details under Personal, Educational, Research & Fellowshipdetails.
  4. Once the details are completed, submit the application by clicking the 'Register' button at the end.
  5. You will get a message of successful submission and also the user name and password for future login.

Candidates after applying online will need to download the application and send it along with the necessary documents and fees to the Registrar by january 15, 2017 (5 PM) (tentative). All relevant documents proving qualification and eligibility should be sent along with the application. Incomplete application will be summarily rejected.

Note: The photographs in the application and hall ticket should be attested by a Gazetted Officer and the name and designation of the Officer should be clearly shown.

Application Fee and Payment Method:

  • The cost of application form is Rs. 20/- and the fee for the test is Rs. 500/·. 
  • All remittances should be either through University Cash Counter or Demand Draft issued by the State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of India or the District Co-Operative Bank drawn in favor of the Finance Officer, University of Kerala, payable at Thiruvananthapuram, for students residing in the state of Kerala. Students residing in any other state can remit fee through a SBI draft, payable at SBI Main branch, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The downloaded application furnished for the examination should be accompanied by self-addressed stamped and easily detachable envelope for sending the pass memo. In the absence of envelope, a fine 50/- will be charged.

Documents to be submitted with the application form:

  • Copies of Master's Degree Certificate and Mar k List attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the downloaded application. A comprehensive mark list showing the exact percentage of marks secured or an equivalent certificate should be furnished. In case of grades awarded certificate showing percentage equivalency should be furnished.
  • Candidates who have qualified from Universities outside Kerala University should produce a copy of Eligibility Certificate
  • Copy of relevant certificate in the case of SC/ST candidates attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the downloaded application. Recent community certificate (within 6 months) should be furnished.
  • Candidates who have appeared for Master's Degree Examination and whose results are still a waited should send a copy of the Hall Ticket attested by Gazetted Officer along with the application. (Last semester/ Year only will be considered.)

The last date for receipt of Application is January 15, 2017(tentative) at 5:00 PM for the January 2017 session.

Selection Procedure for M.Phil Programmes

Selection of candidates to the M.Phil. Programs will be made on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination conducted by the university. Merit list will be prepared keeping in mind the marks scored by the candidates in the entrance test and the marks obtained   in the qualifying examination by the candidates. Both the marks are to be taken in a ratio of 50:50.

The entrance test will be based on the course study completed by candidates at Master’s degree level.

Note: The candidates who appear for Entrance Examination in Malayalam and Tamil shall be considered for admission to M.Phil. in Manuscriptology. Option will be given at the time of Registration.

Selection Procedure for Ph.D. Programmes

Selection of candidates for admission to Ph.D. program at Kerala University will be made on the basis of candidates’ performance in the entrance test conducted by the university.

Entrance test:

  • The general aptitude test will be of three hours duration and will carry a maximum of 200 marks.
  • The test comprises of General Knowledge (40}, Short Answers (120} and an Essay (40 marks}.
  • Post graduate level knowledge of the subject and aptitude for research are expected of the candidate.

Note: While applying for the Eligibility Test, the candidates should carefully choose the subject most suitable according to their qualifying P.G. Degree/ choice or area of interest for doctoral research.
