IIIT Bangalore M.Sc., MS, & PhD Admission 2019: Courses, Cut Off, Fees

International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIITB) is a deemed university which aims to contribute to research and innovation in the field of technology. The university is known to have collaborations with IT industry, foreign institutes and eminent scientists to provide all-round education and opportunities in the field of science and technology.

Among the research programs, IIIT-B ​ offers PhD and MS through research in seven different disciplines. In July 2015, IIIT-B has also launched a new academic programme, M.Sc. (Digital Society) which is positioned at the intersection of a masters in social science and masters in information technology.  This is a 2 year (4 Semester Course), and the batch capacity for this course is around 30.  Check IIIT-B Admission 2019

IIITB conducts the application process in the online mode. Candidates willing to apply to the university can fill the application form on the official website. While the application process for M.Sc. course is conducted in January, the application process for PhD and MS is conducted in September.

Eligibility Criteria


  • You need to have an under-graduate degree (of at least 3 years duration) in any discipline with a first division/class from a recognised University. Candidates appearing in their final year/semester exam can also apply subject to they graduate.
  • Your working knowledge of basic computer applications or some prior certification of computer application/programming from a recognized institute could be useful to you but is not mandatory.
  • If you have a relevant work experience, it may be counted as an added advantage but is not mandatory.

M.Phil/Ph.D in Science & M.Sc

Candidate must have a four-year Bachelors degree in engineering (B.E., B.Tech. or equivalent) and a Masters degree in engineering (M.E., M.Tech. or equivalent) respectively.

Eligibility for MS & PhD in Information Technology & Society

The candidate must have a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in engineering, social sciences, medicine, or public health, are required for MSR and PHD programs, respectively.

Eligibility for MS & PHD in Mathematics & Basic Sciences (Physics and Chemistry)

The minimum qualification required is an M.Sc. in Physics and Chemistry, respectively, or a Master’s degree (Master of Science by Research., M.E., M.Tech. or equivalent) in related disciplines.

Eligibility for MS & PHD in Mathematics

Candidate must have a Master’s degree in engineering (M.Tech., M.E. or equivalent) or a Master’s degree in Mathematics is required.

Selection Process


Once your application is found in order, you will have to take a written examination at IIIT Bangalore that will test numerical/quantitative, analytical, and verbal abilities, as well as design, social, and information technology awareness.

Once you have qualified in your entrance exam you need to appear for a personal interview at IIIT Bangalore, clearing which you shall be called for final counselling.

MS & M.Phil/Ph.D in Science

The University accepts GATE/GRE/UGC-NET/CSIR-NET/JRF/JEST scores for admission to MS and PhD programs. In certain specific circumstances, IIIT-B may conduct its own entrance exam. The respective selection criteria for each discipline is given below:

Computer Science: You should have a valid GATE score of at least 600 if you are looking to apply for Master of Science by Research/ Master of Science (Research). Your selection will be based on GATE score and other application details followed by an interview.

Data Sciences:  If you are interested in applying for Master of Science by Research/ Master of Science (Research) in Data Science, you need to take one of the following examinations:

GATE examination for Computer Science.


A 45-minute written examination conducted by the research domain at IIITB exclusively for applicants to Data Sciences.  Your selection will be based on GATE score and other application details followed by an interview.

Electronic Systems Design: You need to have a GATE or GRE score taken in the last five years. Your selection will be based on GATE/GRE score and other application details followed by an interview.

Networking, Communications & Signal Processing: You are advised to take GATE or GRE examination for this course, however, exceptional applicants without a GATE or GRE score may be required to take a written examination or an oral examination at IIITB, as decided by the faculty in the domain.

Software Engineering: You need to have a GATE or GRE score taken in the last five years, however, if you have a suitable industrial or academic experience and credentials, you may apply without competitive exam (GATE/GRE) scores. If you have a strong industry experience a preference shall be given to you.

For applicants in Physics and Chemistry: You must have appeared and qualified in a national entrance test (CSIR-UGC NET, UGC-NET, or JEST examination). Your selection will be based on GATE/GRE score and other application details followed by an interview. This requirement is however waived for candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering.

For applicants in IT & Society: You are suggested to provide a valid score in GATE, JRF, NET, GRE, or GMAT along with your applications. Those without such a score may apply as well.
