Program Description

  • Master of Global Competition and Consumer Law at the University of Melbourne is offered as a 2-year teaching program.
  • This program is offered as a part-time teaching basis.
  • This course is for students who do not already have a degree in law but who do have an economic, regulatory, compliance, public policy or another relevant background, and who are already working in or seeking to access the expanding and challenging career opportunities on offer in the global field of competition and consumer policy, law, and enforcement.
  • The Global Competition and Consumer Law program is one of only a handful of comprehensive programs in competition and consumer law in the world and ensures students will be at the forefront of the unique challenges and opportunities of this global field, with regimes now in more than 130 countries.
  • One of the most distinctive aspects of this program is the caliber of its instructors which are delivered by Melbourne Law School (ranked No. 6 in the world*), and the No. 1 law school in the Asia-Pacific, the program is delivered by world-leading experts in the field.

  • Capstone subject is compulsory for Master of Global Competition and Consumer Law students and provides an opportunity to consolidate and extend the learning that they have undertaken across their course of study.
  • Each year there will be at least four on-campus subjects on offer which are taught intensively over five days. These subjects will change each year and will generally be subjects in niche areas that complement the online subjects in the program.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

To be considered for entry to the Master of Global Competition and Consumer Law, you must have completed:

  • A degree in a relevant discipline

A degree in a ‘relevant discipline’ would include but not necessarily be limited to a degree in law, economics, commerce, or business. 

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • Students do require one-year of relevant work experience for this particular program.
  • If students have any work experience for more than 1 year then the chances of accepting the applications are more. 


In considering whether to admit an applicant the Selection Committee will also consider:

  • The quality of the degree(s) that the applicant has previously been awarded
  • The standing and reputation of the university or universities that awarded the degree(s)
  • The duration and type of work experience the applicant has obtained
  • The relevance of the applicant’s work experience to this course for which students have applied.
  • The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Student Application and Selection Procedure.

Submission of GRE scores is not compulsory for this program, however, it is recommended to submit a minimum GRE-300 for better a chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study


An international student must obtain a Student Visa of Australia to study and work in Australia for a period longer than 6 months. 

Things to remember:

  • Students can stay up to 5 years and in line with their enrolment.
  • The cost of the VISA application is 420$.
  • can be enrolled in a course of study in Australia.
  • Students have to hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) or fall in one of the exemption categories.

Types of VISA:

  • Student Visa: The student visa is a temporary visa that allows students to come to Australia for a specified period to study at an Australian educational institution.
  • Visitor Visa: After completing the course, students may need to apply for a Visitor (Tourist) Visa to attend the graduation ceremony or stay to have a holiday.
  • Relative’s Visitor Visa: If student's relatives wish to attend the graduation ceremony and require a letter to assist with their Visitor Visa application, they can order an official Graduation letter.
  • Temporary Graduate Visa: The Temporary Graduate Visa allows graduates to work in Australia temporarily after they finish their studies. It has two streams: the Graduate Work stream and the Post-Study Workstream.
  • Applying For permanent Residency: International students who wish to remain in Australia permanently need to apply for Permanent Residency (PR). 

If students are under 18 years of age, they must have approved accommodation and welfare arrangements in place before a visa can be issued.
