Program Description

  • Bachelor of Design at York University is offered as 4 years teaching program.
  • It is an on-course, honours program offered on a full-time basis.
  • It is a comprehensive design program that offers students an intensive and professional education in intimate, student-centered learning environments.
  • York’s Bachelor of Design (BDes Specialized Honours) program recognizes that design is by nature an interdisciplinary endeavor.
  • York Design draws strength from its home in a robust research university, offering students exposure and collaborative opportunities in areas such as business, engineering, technology, health, and more broadly, the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Students have to successfully complete the 120 credits for the course.
  • Through a comprehensive design curriculum, students may choose to focus their studies along with one of three pathways where all of which are augmented by design studies that consider history, futures, and professional practices of design. These pathways are:
    • Visual Communication
    • Information Design
    • Interaction Design
  • Design studio courses are kept very small to foster intimate, intensive learning.
  • The experiential educational opportunities include professional placement in an active design studio during the summer between years three and four.
  • Students get the opportunity to pursue a design study abroad for up to one full year. 
  • University provides the design fabrication lab which maintains industry standard output and production equipment for design students to make their ideas take form.
  • High-end photographic, audio, and visual equipment enables experimentation with a range of media formats. Design studio facilities are dedicated to design student use 24/7.
  • The department of Design, students actively explore and expand the boundaries of design in managing and communicating complex bodies of information for meaningful human experiences in the increasingly visual world.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  •  Students must complete an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) degree.
  •  Students must have to complete the following course such as:
    • English (ENG4U)
    • Five additional 4U or M courses
    • A supplementary evaluation is required after applying for admission. 
  • Depending on the combined performance in academics, audition, portfolio review, and/or interview, the student’s admission average required for this program is in the mid-80s.

Indian Student Eligibility

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:

  • All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSCE)
  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)
  • Indian School Certificate (ISC)
  • Intermediate Examination Certificate
  • Pre-University Examination Certificate
  • Students also have to complete the Grade XII math course.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Study Permits in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

Eligibility:

  • The student must have a valid study permit for the period of employment.
  • He/She should meet the specific skills and experience requirements set by the sponsoring department.

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).

Salary Rate:

  • Hourly rates vary with the nature of the job, the scope of responsibilities and work experience.
  • The salary range will be indicated on the job posting and/or students will be advised by the employer during the interview.
  • Work/study students are paid by their hiring department through York's payroll system.
  • Student Financial Services does not pay students and cannot make adjustments to pay.
