Program Description

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music at York University is offered as a 3-year teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus, honours course offered on both a full-time and part-time basis.
  • The department provides two-degree option i.e:
    • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
    • Bachelor of Arts (BA)

  • It enables students to pursue creative and scholarly work across a wide range of musical genres and traditions, tailored to each individual's unique talents and aspirations.
  • Presenting more than 100 student and faculty concerts a year, as well as masterclasses with renowned Canadian and international artists, the Department of Music, offers countless opportunities to perform and collaborate.
  • In addition to the many student-led ensembles, students can be part of numerous formal ensembles, including:
    • Symphony Orchestra
    • Jazz Orchestra and Choirs
    • West African Drums
    • Concert and Chamber Choirs
    • New Music Ensemble
    • Gospel Choir

  • This program is known for pioneering post-secondary studies in jazz, world, classical and digital music.
  • All first-year Music students enter the BFA program.
  • After the first year, students whose interests centre on music history, criticism and scholarly research may choose to move to the BA program.
  • Courses and workshops in popular music and in non-western performance traditions, such as South Indian, Chinese orchestra, Indonesian gamelan, Caribbean, West African drumming and Celtic Canadian, are a regular feature of the program.
  • York's Sound and Moving Image Library (SMIL) houses a multidisciplinary media collection available to the York University community for educational, research and personal use.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  •  Students must complete an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) degree.
  •  Students must have to complete the following course such as:
    • English (ENG4U)
    • Five additional 4U or M courses
    • A supplementary evaluation is required after students can apply for admission.
  • Depending on student’s combined performance in academics, audition, portfolio review, and/or interview, their admission average required for this program is in the mid-70s.

Indian Student Eligibility

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:

  • All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSCE)
  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)
  • Indian School Certificate (ISC)
  • Intermediate Examination Certificate
  • Pre-University Examination Certificate

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Study Permits in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

Eligibility:

  • The student must have a valid study permit for the period of employment.
  • He/She should meet the specific skills and experience requirements set by the sponsoring department.

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).

Salary Rate:

  • Hourly rates vary with the nature of the job, the scope of responsibilities and work experience.
  • The salary range will be indicated on the job posting and/or students will be advised by the employer during the interview.
  • Work/study students are paid by their hiring department through York's payroll system.
  • Student Financial Services does not pay students and cannot make adjustments to pay.
