Program Description

  • Certificate degree in Foundations for Graduate Legal Studies at York University is offered as a 1-year teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • This program is primarily designed for graduates of law degree programs from outside Canada who are interested in pursuing graduate legal studies in Canada.
  • University also allows students without a law degree who have some law-related work experience or education and who are interested in pursuing further education in law.
  • This Certificate program is designed to provide students with the foundation they need for successful graduate legal study. Students in this program:

    • Study the foundations of the Canadian public and private law in an interactive class setting.
    • Learn and practice common law legal, analytical, and writing skills by building from simple to more complex problems and documents, with an opportunity for small group and individual feedback and tutoring.
    • Lay the foundation for successful performance in LLM courses and in their future legal career.
  • The program is full-time and comprises of four courses that run between January and July each year.
  • Students attend classes in person at both of OsgoodePD and Osgoode Hall Law School campuses.
  • After the intensive two-week orientation course, students can expect to attend class four times per week, for a total of 12 hour’s class time weekly.
  • Classes are interactive and are taught by law professors and adjuncts who are practicing lawyers from a variety of fields.
  • Students who successfully complete the program will be issued an Osgoode certificate indicating either a grade of Pass or Pass with Honours.
  • Students may have job opportunities as Compliance Director, Legal Consultant, etc with an average salary of around 31,000 USD per year.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students may complete any bachelor degree or equivalent degree in the law field from a recognized university
  • Students must have an overall B grade (75%) average (or equivalent) score.
  • The committee will consider students with a lower GPA provided they have 5 years or more of relevant professional experience.

Work Experience Eligibility:

Students are also allowed without a law degree who has some law-related work experience or education and who are interested in pursuing further education in law.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Secured a minimum of 70% marks in one of these certificates: All India Senior School Certificate, Higher Secondary School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Indian School Certificate.
  • Completed grade 11 and grade 12 with 70% marks.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Student VISA in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.

Eligibility:

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).

  • Hourly rates vary with the nature of the job, the scope of responsibilities, and work experience.
  • The salary range will be indicated on the job posting and/or students will be advised by the employer during the interview.
  • Work/study students are paid by their hiring department through York's payroll system.
  • Student Financial Services does not pay students and cannot make adjustments to pay.
