Program Description

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics and Statistics at York University is offered as a 4-year teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis only.
  • The programs are dedicated to the exploration and development of new ideas in mathematics and statistics, and to fostering an understanding, appreciation, and utility of those ideas.

    • Master of Arts (MA, 3 terms)
    • Master of Science (MSc, 6 terms)
    • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD, 12 terms)
  • The researchers provide a tailored program for students completing their doctorates. Students choose to work with a supervisor in an area of pure math, applied math, or statistics.
  • Students also have the opportunity to complete a graduate diploma.
  • The course requirement of the program is 8 half courses (24 credits) in their field of specialization.
  • Students have to complete their specialization in one of the following courses and write comprehensive examinations in subjects appropriate to their chosen specialization.
    • Applied Mathematics
    • Pure Mathematics
    • Statistics
  • Students choosing the statistics specialization are also required to complete a statistical consulting requirement.
  • The specialization requirement is that students much complete a short oral examination.
  • For completing a doctoral thesis, students will be required to complete and successfully defend a thesis constituting a significant contribution to their chosen field of the study.
  • Most full-time students are offered financial support in the form of some combination of the Teaching assistantship, Research assistantship, and Scholarship and bursaries.
  • The department has a number of research groups with interests in the theoretical underpinnings of mathematics and statistics.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must complete a Master's degree from a recognized university.
  • A GPA of at least 3.33 (B+ grade) out of 4.33 is required to be eligible for the program.
  • Students should hold an English Proficiency Test score.

Indian Student Eligibility

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:

  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree from an accredited institution.

Submission of GRE scores is compulsory for this program, however, it is recommended to submit a minimum 300+ score for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Study Permits in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

Eligibility:

  • The student must have a valid study permit for the period of employment.
  • He/She should meet the specific skills and experience requirements set by the sponsoring department.

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).
