Program Description

  • LLM in International Business Law at York University is offered as a 1-year (3-term) specialization program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • This program is designed to give lawyers and professionals from around the world advanced training in international business law.
  • The specialization provides students with knowledge in critical, core international business law courses while allowing students the opportunity to pursue their academic interests through electives.
  • The program is consists of at least 21 credits of core courses.
  • All courses require in-person attendance and are scheduled in a variety of formats (daytime, evening, weekend, and intensive) across both Osgoode Hall and OsgoodePD campuses.
  • Students can complete their degree requirements exclusively through course work or through a combination of course work and a Major Research Paper.
  • The elective courses can be drawn from Osgoode Hall’s JD specialization and from other OsgoodePD LLM specializations.
  • The program starts either in early July or early August.
  • Award-winning faculty teach the latest developments in international trade law, international finance, international business transactions, taxation of cross-border transactions, and other related topics.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must complete a Bachelor of Civil Law from a recognized university
  • Students must have an overall B grade (75%) average (or equivalent) score.
  • The committee will consider students with a lower GPA provided they have 5 years or more of relevant professional experience.

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • Law students with legal practice experience, related work experience, or a demonstrated interest in international business law can apply for this program.
  • Students without a law degree who have at least five years of work experience related to international business law, such as contract management, trade, negotiation, regulation, or governance can also apply for this program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree with a first-class from a NAAC-accredited institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.
  • Proof that students have enough money to support themselves during their stay in Canada.
  • Students must have a copy of law degree transcripts and any post-law degree transcripts or, if students do not have a law degree, a copy of all university and/or college transcripts

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Student VISA in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

Eligibility:

  • The student must have a valid study permit for the period of employment.
  • Students should meet the specific skills and experience requirements set by the sponsoring department.

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).
