Program Description

  • LLM in Tax Law at York University is offered as a 2-year teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a part-time basis.
  • The professional LLM in Tax Law offers students an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the policies, principles, and the internal logic of tax laws in Canada and internationally.
  • Knowledge of tax law is essential to any business environment, and the study of this legal specialization is intellectually fascinating.
  • It covers all aspects of tax law from the most basic rules underlying traditional personal tax planning principles to current developments in the sophisticated design of financial instruments.
  • Students must need to successfully complete a total of 36 credits.
  • Students without a law degree are required to take Introduction to Graduate Legal Studies in their first term.
  • This program is designed to meet the needs of working professionals across Canada and abroad, all electives in the part-time Tax Law specialization are available via video conferencing.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students may complete any bachelor degree or equivalent degree in the law field from a recognized university
  • Students must have an overall B grade (75%) average (or equivalent) score.
  • The committee will consider students with a lower GPA provided they have 5 years or more of relevant professional experience.

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • Law students with legal work experience or a strong demonstrated interest in tax law can get admission in this program.
  • students can also get admission without a law degree who have at least five years of work experience directly related to tax (such as accounting, finance, trusts) who wish to add a strong advanced foundation in tax law to their professional profile.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree with a first-class from a NAAC-accredited institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Student VISA in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

Eligibility:

  • The student must have a valid study permit for the period of employment.
  • Students should meet the specific skills and experience requirements set by the sponsoring department.

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).

  • Hourly rates vary with the nature of the job, the scope of responsibilities, and work experience.
  • The salary range will be indicated on the job posting and/or students will be advised by the employer during the interview.
  • Work/study students are paid by their hiring department through York's payroll system.
