Program Description

  • Master of Social Work at York University is offered as a 2-year teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The two master's level programs combine coursework, practicum, and a practice-based research paper.
  • Students will graduate from one of the programs with the thorough foundation needed to work successfully with diverse populations in a wide variety of social service settings.
  • The MSW is a generalist degree and has the following accredited fields of study:
    • Integration of research and critical practice
    • Identity, diversity, and anti-oppression
    • Social policy analysis and advocacy in a local and global context
  • The MSW program focuses on consideration of complexity in practice in order to enable students to engage in practice from a critical perspective.
  • The 1st year of the program is a foundation year, designed to introduce students to advanced social work education at the graduate level.
  • The 2nd year of the program is integrated into the existing one-year, full-time MSW program.
  • The full-time or part-time MSW program is open to graduates of recognized universities accredited by a recognized social work education body equivalent to the Canadian Association of Social Work Education.
  • For this Master of Nursing Program, the student to teacher ratio is 35:1, which helps increase interaction between professors and students.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have a 4-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university.
  • A GPA of at least 3.33 (B+ grade) out of 4.33 in the last two years of study is required to be eligible for the program.

Work Experience:

  • Students who do not have a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), but hold an honors UG degree in a related subject and who have relevant professional, personal and volunteer experience in the field can get admission in this program.
  • Two years of experience in social work/social justice work (paid and/or voluntary) is preferred.

Indian Student Eligibility

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have any one of the following certificates:

  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree from an accredited institution.

Submission of GRE scores is compulsory for this program, however, it is recommended to submit a minimum 300+ score for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • A Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Study Permits in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

Eligibility:

  • The student must have a valid study permit for the period of employment.
  • He/She should meet the specific skills and experience requirements set by the sponsoring department.

Restrictions:

  • All students are permitted to accept one Work-Study position only per program period.
  • Non-degree students (i.e. visiting students, students on a LOP) are not eligible for Work-Study.
  • Students are not eligible to hold a work-study position in the same term in which they are holding an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (or equivalent).
