Program Description

  • The Graduate Diploma in Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner is a 1-year full-time program at the University of Windsor.
  • This program also includes health promotion, disease prevention, and wellness care for families, individuals, and communities.
  • In the Nursing Leadership field, students will explore concepts of contemporary nursing leadership in management, research, and education.
  • Students will have the opportunity to develop skills necessary to impact policy and decision-making relevant to the profession of nursing, in particular, and the health care system in general.
  • In the primary health care nurse practitioner field, students will be prepared to give collaborative and autonomous primary health care to individuals, groups, or, communities.
  • The program well prepared for careers in:
    • Community Health Centres
    • Long Term Care
    • Palliative Care
    • Community-based facilities (public health, occupational health, correctional services)
    • Ambulatory Care Centres (i.e., urgent/emergency departments, primary care clinics)

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have completed BSc (or equivalent nursing degree, e.g. BN, etc.), with a current Registered Nurse (RN) status, and a completed Master's degree (Nursing or health-related degree preferred).
  • Students must have a minimum B grade.

Language Requirments:

  • Students whose official language is not English are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS Scores.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Student visa and Visitor Visa (Optional) is required to study in Canada. 
  • The Student visa is a document that the Canadian government issues that allow foreign nationals to study at institutions in Canada.
  • A Student visa is usually valid for the length of the student’s study program, plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days lets the student prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend their stay.
  • The cost of the Student visa is 112 USD.
  • The students need these documents to apply for a study permit:
    • Proof of acceptance i.e The offer letter that the student received from the university.
    • Proof of identity 
    • Proof of financial support i.e Documents showing the financial status.
    • A valid passport or travel document. 
    • A valid temporary resident visa (if required) Note: If the student has an approved eTA, it will be linked to the passport that is used to apply for the student visa.

Work Study

The Student may work on-campus without a work permit if:

  • The student is a full-time student at the University of Windsor
  • The student has a valid study permit
  • The student study permit allows them to work on campus, and
  • The student has a valid SIN number

International Students may work off-campus if:

  • The Student is a full-time student at the University of Windsor
  • The Student has a valid study permit
  • Enrolled in any academic program
  • The Enrolled program is at least six months or more in duration and leads to a degree, diploma or certificate
  • The study permit allows them to work off-campus, and
  • Have a valid SIN number
  • If The Student meets all the requirements above, then the students may:

    • work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions 
    • work full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break
