Program Description

  • The Certificate in Early Childhood Education at Douglas College is offered as 18 months or 3-term teaching program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on both full time and part-time basis.
  • Students have to successfully complete 43 credits.
  • The program integrates theoretical material with laboratory and practicum experience to give graduates the skills and knowledge to work with newborns through to children eight years of age.
  • Students learn to assess and guide child development, promote health and nutrition, communicate and collaborate with children and caregivers, and manage a child care setting. 
  • In a full-time program, students will take 5 or 6 courses each semester and the first three semesters are day classes, some diploma courses are held in the evening in the fourth term.
  • The certificate work can be completed in three semesters and diplomas completed in four semesters.
  • In part-time program, students will take the same courses as the full-time students over a three-year schedule
  • The courses are held in the evening or on Saturdays, during the day and students will graduate in 3 to 4 years.
  • ECE certification allows graduates to apply for a provincial license to practice as an Early Childhood Educator while continuing to study part-time to earn an ECE Diploma in Special Needs.
  • Students may have job opportunities as a Childcare Center Director, Childcare Worker, Special Education Teacher, etc.
  • The average salary of the program goes up to 36,000 USD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students have to complete High school graduation or a minimum of 17 years of age by the end of the first month of studies in the semester of entry to Douglas College.
  • Students hold a minimum overall grade average of 60% (or equivalent) in the final year of high school.
  • Students acquire a minimum final grade of “C” or 60% (or equivalent) in Grade 11 Mathematics or equivalent for most programs.
  • Students must be age 18 by December 31st of the year students enter the program.
  • Complete and show evidence of 20 hours of volunteer or work experience in a licensed Early Childhood Education.

Language Requirements:

  • The students must be able to understand and fluently speak the language of instruction (English) in the program. Proof of linguistic proficiency may be required.
  • The students whose official language is not English must submit the English Language Proficiency scores like IELTS or TOEFL.
  • If the student does not meet the language requirements they can take English Language Learning and Acquisition (ELLA) program and complete it and pursue this program.

  • Two Reference Letter: The two personal admissions reference letters from coaches, PE teachers, or community leaders verifying physical education, sport or work experience, and a character reference.
  • Financial Documentation - The Proof that shows the financial background of the student.
  • Letter of Recommendation - This shows who recommended the student to pursue the degree.
  • Statement of Purpose - This is an essay or any written statement written by the student while applying.
  • College Transcripts - The marks statement provided by the education board after completion of the previous academic qualifications.
  • Criminal Record – Students must complete a criminal record.
  • Students complete a medical declaration or assessment indicating a satisfactory level of physical and emotional health. 
  • Students have to submit English Language requirement scores like TOEFL, IELTS, etc.

VISA

  • Student visa and Visitor Visa (Optional) is required to study in Canada. 
  • The Student visa is a document that the Canadian government issues that allow foreign nationals to study at institutions in Canada.
  • A Student visa is usually valid for the length of the student’s study program, plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days lets the student prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend their stay.
  • The cost of the Student visa is 112 USD.
  • The students need these documents to apply for a student visa:
    • Proof of acceptance i.e The offer letter that the student received from the university.
    • Proof of identity 
    • Proof of financial support i.e Documents showing the financial status.

Work Study

  • "On-campus" is defined as employment facilities within the boundaries of the campus. Students are only allowed to work on the campus at which they are registered as a Full-Time student.
  • The student may work on-campus without a work permit if:
    • Is a full-time student enrolled at Douglas College
    • Have a valid study permit
    • Have a valid SIN 
  • International students can work off-campus if the student is:
    • full-time student enrolled at Douglas College
    • In an academic program that is at least 6 months in duration and that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate
    • Have a valid study permit, valid SIN
  • To maintain working eligibility off-campus, most students must be enrolled full-time (9 credits minimum).
  • Eligible students can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions.
