Program Description

  • Dalhousie University offers a Doctor of Medicine for a duration of 4 years.
  • It is an on-campus, thesis-based program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The program curriculum balances classroom work with clinical and elective opportunities in rural clinics and in large, tertiary-care hospitals to help and become a caring, resourceful physician.
  • students will be encouraged to be an agent of creative change in health-care institutions and in communities, and provide outstanding patient-centered care.

  • The program is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in cooperation with the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS).
  • Students will have many opportunities to get real-life hospital experience early on, through the clinical skills components or by choosing an elective that offers additional hands-on learning.
  • The program is divided into three key sections, Med 1 and Med 2, followed by Clerkship.
  • In the first two years, Med 1 and Med 2 give students a basic foundation in medicine, including the anatomy and systems of the human body, while considering other important aspects of health care, from the philosophical and ethical to the practical.
  • Clerkship, consisting of two phases completed over two academic years (Med 3 and Med 4), gives students even more opportunity to apply their learning in a range of situations and fields.
  • Classes in the medical program will have a variety of themes and case-based units that focus on a particular area of medical training.
  • Students also get the opportunity to do the sample courses in Human Development, Internal Medicine, and Surgery.
  • Job opportunities after the Doctor of Medicine are Physician, General Surgeon, etc and the average salary goes up to 44,000 USD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students should have completed a 4-year baccalaureate degree in any discipline from an accredited university.
  • Students also get admission with a 3-year degree.
  • GPA of at least 3.3/4.33 or better is required to be eligible for the program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with an upper second class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Students with bachelor's degrees are encouraged to submit their MCAT scores.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • Personal Statement: It should include a brief overview of themselves, strengths, and any work experience and/or education that students have.
  • Transcripts: Students have to submit transcripts from all universities/colleges attended, World Education Services Assessments, and English Language Proficiency test scores.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Confirmation of Employment Form:  Students must be emailed as an attachment by applicant or referee. 
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Students are required to get a study visa to study in Canada.
  • They may also need a Temporary Resident VISA (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
  • The cost of the study visa is 112 USD and it is valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.

Work Study

Students must have a work-study visa to work in Canada.

  • On-Campus Work: Students enrolled full time are eligible to work on-campus. Students can work no more than 10-15 hours per week.
  • Off-Campus Work: Students who are continually enrolled full time at Dalhousie University are eligible to work off-campus. Students can work 20 hours a week or full time during a scheduled break.
  • Co-Op Work Visa: If students are required to work as an integral part of the studies or enrolled in a co-op program, they may be permitted to work off-campus full time. Students will need a co-op work visa.
