Program Description

  • Dalhousie University offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Anatomy and NeuroBiology for a duration of 4 years.
  • It is an on-campus, thesis-based program offered on a full-time.
  • This program will provide students with a sound multidisciplinary background in the morphological sciences, in-depth research training, and an introduction to teaching anatomy.
  • The programs will provide students with:
    • a multidisciplinary background in neurobiology
    • in-depth research training in a particular aspect of neurobiology
    • opportunity to learn and teach human anatomy
  • As a PhD student, they have no formal course requirements. Students must complete at least one credit of required courses if they have not previously taken core courses in anatomical sciences.
  • students take 4 to 5 years to complete this program.
  • As part of the degree requirements, students are expected to assist with laboratory teaching in anatomy courses offered by the department to undergraduate and professional students in their second year of study and beyond.
  • The amount of teaching is between 20 and 40 hours per year. They may request relief from teaching in their final year.
  • Students are expected to attend departmental seminars. They are required to give at least one seminar on their thesis during the course of their study.
  • Students must pass a PhD preliminary (oral) exam, designed to test the depth and breadth of their knowledge in areas related to their research.
  • Students are encouraged to take the exam in their second or third year of PhD study, and it must be taken at least one year before their PhD thesis defense.
  • THe average salary goes upto 55,000 USD after completion of the program.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students have to complete the thesis Master’s degree or it's equivalent from a first-class division from the recognized university.
  • A minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B grade) in the last 60 credit hours of study is required to be eligible for the program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.


Required Document List

Following are the required document:

  • Online application form and fees: Students have to fill the online form and submit the application fees. 
  • Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
  • Two Professional References: Referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) should comment on academics and that references should submit along with the application system.
  • Personal Statement: It should include a brief overview of themselves, strengths, and any work experience and/or education that students have.
  • Transcripts: Students have to submit transcripts from all universities/colleges attended, World Education Services Assessments, and English Language Proficiency test scores.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Confirmation of Employment Form:  Students must be emailed as an attachment by applicant or referee. 
  • Proof of name change: Required only if name discrepancies exist between transcripts/assessments/test scores and other application documents.  Examples of proof: Marriage/divorce certificates, 2 copies of government-issued ID that include a previous and current name and date of birth.
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Students are required to get a study visa to study in Canada.
  • They may also need a Temporary Resident VISA (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
  • The cost of the study visa is 112 USD and it is valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.

Work Study

Students must have a work-study visa to work in Canada.

  • Off-Campus Work: Students who are continually enrolled full time at Dalhousie University are eligible to work off-campus. Students can work 20 hours a week or full time during a scheduled break.
  • Co-Op Work Visa: If students are required to work as an integral part of the studies or enrolled in a co-op program, they may be permitted to work off-campus full time. Students will need a co-op work visa.
