Program Description

  • Dalhousie University offers a Juris Doctor program for a duration of 3 years.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on both a full-time and a part-time basis.
  • This program at the Schulich School of Law is a first degree in law that gives students a solid preparation for the practice of law as well as a respect for and participation in public life.
  • Studying law is stimulating, intellectually demanding, and fun. Students will be among other highly motivated students developing advanced communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in legal research and writing.
  • The regular program requires the full-time attendance of students.
  • The first year is entirely compulsory, while the second and third years offer flexible course options to the students.
  • Second and third-year students must complete between 29-31 credit hours, including a major paper writing requirement, each year.
  • The full-time program extends over 3 academic years, from September to May. A student who has failed the work of a year may, subject to the limitations of space, be readmitted, but the program must be completed in 4 academic years.
  • The JD program is designed to train students in those qualities which distinguish the educated lawyer, whether engaged in the practice of law, in government service.
  • Classes are conducted by the case method with emphasis upon discussion between teacher and students, based upon assigned materials and topics that students are expected to have considered in advance.
  • Research and written assignments are required of all students. These may involve substantial time in addition to regular class periods.
  • The Schulich School of Law offers to fund a number of paid summer internships in many different types of organizations in Canada and around the world such as international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), think tanks, businesses, governments, and charities, etc.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have completed the degree of Bachelor of Arts, Science, or Commerce or an equivalent degree from Dalhousie University or from another degree-granting college.
  • Students must have a GPA of 3.7 on Dalhousie’s 4.3 scales.
  • Mature students must be 26 years of age on or before Sept. 1 of the year for which they seek admission to law school.
  • Students applying for admission are required to submit results of the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have completed a master's degree with an upper second class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • Two Professional References: Referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) should comment on academics and that references should submit along with the application system.
  • Personal Statement: It should include a brief overview of themselves, strengths, and any work experience and/or education that students have.
  • Transcripts: Students have to submit transcripts from all universities/colleges attended, World Education Services Assessments, and English Language Proficiency test scores.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Confirmation of Employment Form:  Students must be emailed as an attachment by applicant or referee. 
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • Students are required to get a study visa to study in Canada.
  • They may also need a Temporary Resident VISA (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
  • The cost of the study visa is 112 USD and it is valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.

    Work Study

    Students must have a work-study visa to work in Canada.

    • On-Campus Work: Students enrolled full time are eligible to work on-campus. Students can work no more than 10-15 hours per week.
    • Off-Campus Work: Students who are continually enrolled full time at Dalhousie University are eligible to work off-campus. Students can work 20 hours a week or full time during a scheduled break.
    • Co-Op Work Visa: If students are required to work as an integral part of the studies or enrolled in a co-op program, they may be permitted to work off-campus full time. Students will need a co-op work visa.
