St. Stephen’s University Canada is the smallest liberal arts university in Canada offering degree programs in humanities, social sciences, International Studies, Community Engagement, and Psychology. Each year, the school admits less than 30 students to maintain a smaller class size where students and professors interact wholly. St. Stephen's University offers courses at bachelor’s level, and graduate certificate level. Also, the institute offers a fully online graduate or undergraduate Certificate in Religion, Peace and Justice that includes six courses.

  • Admission at St. Stephen University is open to students regardless of race, class or GPA
  • Students with a GPA lower than 70% which is the minimum requirements for admission can still be admitted if they show other proofs of academic abilities.
  • Admission at St. Stephen is conducted on a first-come-first-accepted basis, not on the highest GPA student's basis. Thus, students with a low GPA above the minimum GPA can still be admitted if they apply early.
  • Students with demonstrated fluency in English during the application process and interview session are offered English Language Test waiver.

International Deadlines

St. Stephen’s University does not have a definite deadline for application into its program. Since admission is conducted on a first come first served basis where very limited slots are available, the admission window only closes when the capacity for the semester or session is filled. International applicants who are interested in the school are advised to apply early and send their transcripts to the school to secure a place. St. Stephen University offers liberal arts education with a mix of spiritual development and extended world travel. Programs are offered in humanities, psychology, theology, etc. Admission slots in St. Stephen are limited and only students who apply early are given a chance at the school

Applications Steps

  • Completion of the online application form
  • Submission of a response to SSU Community Values Statement through one of the following media:
    • A paragraph (of approximately 250 words) on SSU Community Values Statement form
    • Brief video presentation sent to
    • A phone call with the admission team.
  • Submission of academic records, transcripts and other supporting documents directly to SSU
  • Confirmation of enrolment by depositing a non-refundable advance tuition fee of 200 CAD for undergraduate programs and 500 CAD for graduate programs

Students with less than 70% score in 12 grades will have to submit the following:

  • A reference from a teacher or academic source that would attest to the reasonable hope for your ability to complete a degree.
  • A written explanation by you for why high school grades are low (e.g. family circumstances or behavioral issues), and why there would be a good expectation for academic success at SSU.
  • A statement describing a relevant learning disability including a copy of a valid assessment or plans to obtain one.

English Proficiency Test Score for International Students

International students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency by presenting one of the following English language test results:

  • Minimum scores for acceptable tests are the same for the undergraduate and postgraduate programs
  • Alternative language proficiency test results with demonstrated equivalence can also be accepted
  • On some rare occasions, the admission team may waive the English language test requirement for applicants who show fluency in the use of English during the application process and the oral interview

Visa Application Process for International Students

To study at St. Stephen University in Canada, students have to apply for a study permit/ Canadian Student Visa and applicants must possess a passport that lasts longer than the program duration. Applicants can apply for a visa at their Canadian country embassy or their website, right after admission has been granted and the general requirements are listed below. Requirements may slightly differ for each country for the generic requirements for applying for a study permit include:

  • Proof of Identity or passport
  • Letter of admission or proof of acceptance into the university
  • Proof of financial ability or financial support which may include documents like bank statements, scholarship letters. Etc

Application requirements:

The standard GPA admission criterion is a 70% combined average of Applicant's university-prep Grade 12 courses. However, applicants whose GPA is below 70% can be admitted if he/she can demonstrate the hope of a successful academic performance in one or more of the following ways:

  • A reference from a teacher or academic source attesting to student’s academic ability to complete a degree if admitted.
  • A written explanation by applicants stating reasons for his/her low GPA with reasons for the expectation of a good performance at SSU.
  • A statement describing a medical condition that impeded learning.
  • An impressive plan or roadmap for academic success with a partnership with an academic mentor

St. Stephen’s University Graduate Admissions

St. Stephen University offers programs like Master of Ministry in Theology & Culture, Master of Arts in Theology & Culture, and Diploma in Theology & Culture all in the department of Theology and Culture. The graduate school also offers a graduate certificate in Religion, Peace, and Justice

A 200 CAD Confirmation Fee is required for Undergraduate applicants prior to the commencement of the student’s first term, and full payment is required at the beginning of the term unless the student has proof that he/she will be in receipt of student loan funds. In that case, the balance owed beyond the amount of loans being granted is payable at the beginning of the term. The students applying for Graduate programs will have to pay a deposit of 500 CAD for enrollment. Also, all the students will have to sign a Student’s Contract.


Ques. What is the mode of delivery of the certificate in Religion, Peace, and Justice?

Ans. The course is online where Reputable Guest Lecturers lectures students via the online channel

Ques. Are the fees for international students different from the fees for domestic students?

Ans. All students including Canadian, US, and International students pay the same fees

Ques. Is St. Stephen a residential institution?

Ans. Yes, St. Stephen is a residential school. Accommodation is provided within the community. If the accommodation space is exhausted, students may be required to stay at other apartments

Ques. What is academic good standing?

Ans. To remain in good standing, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0. Transcripts in this case will include the note that the student is “in good standing” and has completed such and such a term or year of the program.

Ques. Can I change my course after being admitted?

Ans. Course changes are permitted only up to the end of the second full week of classes. Courses dropped within the first two weeks of classes will not appear on transcripts. Courses dropped after that time will appear on transcripts with the letter “W” (for Withdrawn) indicated in place of a grade.
