Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, or PICAchef, was established in 1997. It is a private, co-ed culinary institute located in Vancouver, British Columbia. It offers a myriad of courses to its students including wine programs, Professional Diploma Programs in Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts, casual classes, etc. to study in Canada.

  • All classes here have a ratio of 15:1 of students per chief instructor.

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts Admission Deadlines

Applicants can apply for admission at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts from up to a year before starting the classes. Students are recommended to apply early for their semester of choice -

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts International Admissions

International students need to fulfill the following requirements to apply for admission at PICAchef :

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Secondary School Completion Graduation from Grade 12 /B.C. high school diploma / B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma / General Educational Development (GED), or another secondary school completion which is equivalent from a different jurisdiction).
    • All documents need to be submitted with certified translations in English if in a language other than English
  • Students above 19 years of age need to apply as mature students
  • English language proficiency Standardized Test Scores
  • The desire for knowledge and skills to bake and cook

Though the following documents are not required for application of admission, students are required to submit them before, or by the first day of classes :

  • Photocopy of High School Certificate/Diploma or equivalent
  • If the student is older than 19, photocopy of a valid driver's license or birth certificate
  • Receipt of the Hepatitis A vaccination or a positive test result for the Hepatitis A antibodies
  • Proof of valid Health Insurance coverage for the entire duration of the selected course
  • Serving it Right Certification
  • English language proficiency scores (TOEFL score preferred)

Visa Process for International Applicants

International Students need to apply for a visitors visa to get the entry in Canada and then apply for a study permit to study in Canada.

Study permits fees: 113 USD

Processing time: Varies (Usually 12 days for visitor visa from India for Canada, not including time for biometrics)

Validity: Length of study time + 90 days

*Not required for short term studies of less than 6 months duration or for registered Indians in Canada. Students from China, India, the Philippines or Vietnam can apply online through Student Direct Stream.

Documents required:

  • Acceptance letter from DSI (Designated Learning Institute)
  • Valid passport or travel document
  • Proof of financial support
  • Two recent passport size photos (name and date of birth of the person should be written on the back of each photo)
  • Letter of explanation
  • CAQ (Certificat d'acceptation du Québec) and Custodian declaration (if applicable) may be required.

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts Certificate Courses

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts offers two certificate programs to its students to study in Canada, they are as follows:

  • 3-Month Baking & Pastry Certificate: It has 420 credit hours and its a 90% hands-on course.
  • 3-Month Culinary Arts Certificate: The course teaches knife skills, culinary terms and equipment usage, plating skills, along with the preparation of flavourful stocks and the art of butchery and saucier.

Following are the admission requirements that international students need to satisfy to get admission at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts:

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts Diploma Courses

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver offers four diploma programs to its students to study in Canada:

  • 2-year Culinary/Baking & Pastry Arts Co-op: This diploma course is offered full time with 1 year in school and 1 year of working in the industry. It teaches both fundamentals and advanced culinary Alan baking techniques.
  • 1-Year Culinary / Baking & Pastry Arts: Takes a total of 1,792 credit hours, out of which 90% is hands-on. It teaches culinary arts and baking and pastry art along with an in-depth knowledge of hospitality operations.
  • 6-Month Culinary Arts Diploma: A total of 917 credit hours and teaches topics like knife skills, entrepreneurship, stocks and soups, food safety certification, sensory and palate training, industry liaisoning, etc.
  • 6-Month Baking & Pastry Arts Diploma: A 917 credit hours program, 90% of which are hands-on and teach topics like confections, fermentation, molecular gastronomy, cheesecakes, beer basics, cocktails, and mixology, etc.

Following are the admission requirements that the international students need to satisfy:

  • English Proficiency Test Scores- TOEFL, IELTS, etc.
  • Proof of Health Insurance
  • Proof of Receipt showcasing the Hepatitis A vaccination or a positive test result for the Hepatitis A antibodies

Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts offers Lifetime Employment Placement Assistance to all its graduates. They maintain an on-site job board for all their current students and also have regular communication with their database of alumni for job opportunities for graduates.
