Program Description

  • Simon Fraser University offers MSc in Finance with a duration of 16-months,  full-time program (4 semesters).
  • The program begins with two courses held online in mid-July, requiring about 3-4 hours of total work per week.
  • The classes are Online delivered for introductory courses and in-class delivered after introductory courses.
  • Finance program offers two areas of specialization: Investment Management and Risk Management
  • The MSc program helps the student to learn:
    • Blend finance theory with practice
    • Develop financial skills employers need
    • Manage a real-life investment fund
    • Learn industry financial platforms
    • Students are exposed to fundamental finance theory and practice, as well as learning practical programming skills in C++, VBA, and Matlab.
    • Students get opportunities to join the Student Investment Advisory Service (SIAS) Fund team to add an extra practical component to their learning experience and knowledge into practice.
    • Students may have an average work experience of 3.5 years and who do not have any work experience in Canada can participate in week-long, full-time externships.

    Eligibility & Entry Requirement

      Students with related Academic Qualification:

      • Bachelor's degree or related field from a recognized institution.
      • The related fields include a UG degree in business, commerce, economics, mathematics, physics, or other quantitative oriented programs.
      • GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B grade).

      Students with Relevant Work Experience:

      • The relevant work experience in financial services is more useful for students opting for the course-based M.Sc program
      • For the thesis-based M.Sc program, admission is offered based upon publications, participation in research projects, and academic awards.

      Others:

      Students without related academic experience or work experience students are also encouraged to apply, given they have following requirement:

      • Holding a professional designation such as a PRM or FRM and evidence of strong mathematics competency would also be ideal candidates.
      • Students with a strong mathematical aptitude who have completed the graduate diploma in business administration offered by the University would be qualified for admission consideration.

      Indian Student Eligibility:

      Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

      • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution
      • Or, completed a minimum of  3.0 CGPA in a quantitative discipline, which may include business, economics, mathematics, engineering or the sciences 

      Submission of a GMAT score of 550 and GRE exam (minimum of 155 in each section), however, it is recommended to submit the scores (GMAT: 600+ or GRE 310+ in verbal and quantitative section) for better a chance of admission. 

      Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.


      Required Document List

      Following are the required documents:

      • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work and/or volunteer experience.
      • Three academic or professional references: Referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) should comment on academics and that references should submit along with the application system.
      • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
      • Electronic Official transcripts: Submit copies of official transcripts from post-secondary institutions attended in PDF format.
      • A Credential evaluation report from WES Canada or ICES: If students have credentials from an institution outside of Canada or the United States, they must submit a credential evaluation report from WES Canada (course-by-course report) or ICES (comprehensive report).
      • Statement of research interests: Student has to fill their interesting research work area in the application form.

      VISA & Work Study

      VISA

      • A Student VISA is required to study in Canada which allows to work and do research on-campus.
      • The Student VISA is usually valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.
      • At the time of VISA application, students need to provide various documents:

      Work Study

      The Work-Study Program is an opportunity to participate in research-based projects. Students may work On-Campus and off-campus.

      On-Campus: Work-Study is available during the Fall, Spring and Summer terms. Students will be awarded 140 Work-Study hours for a term. The hourly rate of pay is $15.20 per hour. Students may work on campus without a work permit if they meet  the following requirements:

      • Valid study permit that includes a condition stating Student may work on campus
      • Enrolled as a full-time student

      Off-Campus: Students are eligible to work off-campus and may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions, and full time during scheduled breaks. Students are eligible to work off-campus without a work permit if they meet the following requirements:

      • Valid study permit that includes a condition stating student may work off-campus
      • Enrolled in a program of 6 months or more that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate
      • Enrolled as a full-time student
