Simon Fraser Campus Locations

SFU has three campuses located in Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey. All three campuses offer varying academic programs.

The Burnaby campus is the University’s original and main campus and hosts the largest library among the three campuses - W.A.C. Bennett Library.

The Surrey campus is particularly targeted towards first-year students with more access to professors for one-on-one support. This campus is situated conveniently between Metro Vancouver and towards the south of Fraser River.

The Vancouver Campus has multiple facilities. This campus is home to six buildings with all the amenities and facilities for students. It is also described as ‘intellectual heart of the city’ by Vancouver Sun.

When and How to Apply at SFU

Students can apply for their chosen programs in three sessions as per their convenience. Different programs at the institute are subject to different application procedures. Here are a few common steps that one has to follow to fill in the application form.

  1. Visit the official website of Simon Fraser University at
  2. Select the program, i.e., Undergraduate, graduate or Exchange/ Study Abroad Programs
  3. Check the admission requirement and select the session.
  4. Register yourself and then proceed with application form filling.
  5. Non-refundable application fee to be paid is CAD 78. It must be paid via credit card.
  6. Once you have successfully submitted the application, will be required to submit all previous transcripts, test scores such as SAT and ACT, and other supporting documents to the University.

  • Candidates will have to show proof of finance while applying for student visa.
  • Courses offered by Faculty of Business Administration, the School of Computing Science, and the School of Engineering Science are higher.

Simon Fraser University Scholarships 

Simon Fraser University also provides Entrance scholarships, awards and bursaries to international students. Below are the awards and scholarships offered to undergraduate students:

  • H.Y. Louie and Lohn Entrance Award which require applications
  • Kenneth E. Mackenzie Annual Entrance Scholarship
  • Sigma Chi Leadership Entrance Scholarship
  • Lloyd Carr-Harris Entrance Scholarship (application not required)


  • Entrance scholarships for graduates require an application except for the International Summit Transfer Entrance Scholarship.
  • There are also several other scholarships and fellowships offered to graduate students including the SFU Private Awards and the Graduate Fellowship.

Work While You Study at SFU

On Campus

Students can work on campus while studying at the institute through the work-study program or as a teaching assistant. For the work-study program, they will have to fulfil the following conditions:

  1. Must be enrolled in at least 9 standard graded courses
  2. Have a demonstrated financial need
  3. Have a valid study permit
  4. Have a SIN (Social Insurance Number)

Teaching assistantships are offered on a competitive basis each semester to qualified graduate students.


Students can also work off campus while studying at the institute. They will have to fulfil the following conditions.

  1. Have a valid study permit
  2. Have a co-op work permit (if required)
  3. Study full time in a program at a recognized institution.
  4. Have already started studying
  5. Studying to obtain a degree, diploma or certificate with a duration of at least 6 months
  6. Have a SIN (Social Insurance Number)

How to get a SIN?

SIN is mandatory in order to work on campus or off campus and for tax purposes. It is no way related to a person’s health insurance number. A social number is valid until the end of your stay or a maximum 5 years. You can renew the same if necessary.

One can obtain SIN by going in person to Service Canada office along with the following documents:

  1. Your Passport
  2. Your study permit
  3. Your off campus work permit/ co-op/internship program permit.

Work After Graduation

One can work post their graduation after obtaining a work permit. The post-graduation work permit is valid for the same duration as that of the last study program you have completed. Students have to fulfil the following conditions.

  1. Must have been a full-time student in Canada
  2. Completed with a study program with minimum duration of 8 months
  3. Apply for the work permit within 90 days of receiving a document declaring completion of studies.
  4. Must have a valid study permit.

The University has several of its own residential halls/houses at its Burnaby and Vancouver campuses. At Burnaby there are –
